Monsters from abroad (weekly review)By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog
As part of his intellectual evolution, Ramzan Kadyrov has now progressed to an understanding of the secrets of the “world conspiracy” and is eager to share his discoveries with the public. In fact, however, his political philosophy is not an entirely new one. The view of the United States as the world's axis of evil and the enemy of Russia has a long and solid tradition. Many of Russia’s anti-Western doctrines are founded upon it – Communism, Nationalism, and concepts like the geopolitical theories of Alexander Dugin, which are currently fashionable in certain corridors of power. On June 10, the website of the President and Government of the Chechen Republic published an interview with Kadyrov in which he says that the U.S. is trying to ruin Russia by provoking instability in the Caucasus. ... | >> full

Prague Watchdog: The Jihad Aganst Trees (Weekly Review)

The jihad aganst trees (weekly review)By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog The militant rhetoric and triumphant statements of State Duma deputy Adam Delimkhanov last week sounded not so much unconvincing as rather hysterical. It is hard for a person whom the Dubai police suspect as Sulim Yamadayev ‘s assassin to escape the accusation of his own free will. From now on the man in the street will interpret any action of his as a desire to clear his name and gain favour. Many considered that Ramzan Kadyrov had appointed his favourite to lead the hunt for the mujahedin with only one purpose in view – to protect him from criminal proceedings. This obvious vested interest greatly detracts from the value of their claimed achievements. However, the man in the street is not inclined to trust anyone or anything – that is his nature. It must be ... | >> full

The comfortable lap of dictatorshipBy Usam Baysayev, special to WatchdogSamashki, Chechen Republic Last week, as I was driving with my family out of the tunnel along Grozny’s Akhmat Kadyrov Prospect (it used to be known as Abdurakhman Avtorkhanov Prospect), a silver Lada Priora came up behind my Lada 9. I was already doing a fair speed – the road is a good one – but the people behind me seemed to be in a hurry. Now they swerved to the right, now went back into place, almost pressing up against my fender. They could not overtake me on the left, as I was driving in the inside lane. Observing the dangerous manoeuvres, I stepped on the gas, moved forward and let them pass. The Priora darted away at high speed. I caught up with it at the traffic lights. No sooner had I stopped than a ... | >> full

Chechen Exiles Hint At Talks With Moscow-Backed Leadership
June 04, 2009 LONDON -- There are signs that the leaders of the Chechen separatist government in exile and Chechnya's pro-Moscow leadership might hold unprecedented meetings in the near future, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
The chairman of the Chechen exile government, Akhmed Zakaev, told an RFE/RL correspondent in London that the talks would be aimed at finding a political solution to the situation in the conflict-weary North Caucasus.
Zakaev said he was ready to meet with "anyone," whether Russians or Chechen officials supported by the Kremlin, in an effort to resolve tensions and fighting that have lasted for centuries.
Zakaev insists that the last open and democratic elections held in Chechnya came 12 years ago and that he represents the government of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria that was created in accordance with the Constitution of Chechnya.
Zakaev added that all existing groups of Chechen politicians both inside ... >> full

June divertissement. With an odour of cannabisBy German Sadulayev, special to Prague Watchdog Hello, dear friends! As promised, I have made a visit to our wonderful homeland, the Chechen Republic. Everyone is alive and well, and they asked after you, sent you their marshalla*. It is summer, the weather is warm, the trees are in leaf, and in the places where it has not been cut the grass grows to head height. Tomatoes are 30 rubles (1 USD) a kilo. If it’s nekhch* you’re after it’s better not to buy it in the centre of town, it is hard and too salty. But in the small shop near the cable plant the cheese is soft, it fairly melts in your mouth! In my column before last I said I would inspect the republic with regard to the government’s promise to revive the fish farms and set up ... | >> full
