WWF Warns Of Threat To Chechnya's Rivers
Chechnya – Security – Russian forces taking water from a mountain river, near the village of Selmentauzen, east of Argun Gorge, 16Mar2000 Russian forces taking water from a mountain stream (TASS) June 22, 2006 -- Oil spills and damage to sewerage systems are causing heavy pollution in Chechnya's rivers and lakes, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Russian officials warned today.
Yelena Kulikova of the WWF said that the dense mountain forests of war-torn Chechnya and other republics in the North Caucasus are "also in danger because of illegal logging."

But over that period he succeeded in formalizing the organizational and logistical framework to expand the war into other North Caucasus republics. New Chechen Separatist Leader Takes Charge
Chechnya -- Umarov, Doku, VP and field commander, June 05 Doku Umarov, the new leader of the Chechen rebels (file photo) (RFE/RL) PRAGUE, June 21, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Chechen separatists have formally announced that a rebel field commander, Doku Umarov, has been appointed the leader of the self-declared Chechen separatist government.
Umarov succeeds Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, who was killed by pro-Russian forces on June 17.
A statement on a separatist website posted on June 21 said Umarov had taken over as president the day Sadulayev was killed.
