Ruslan Isayev, special to Prague Watchdog

The death of the Chechen theologian Abdul-Khalim Sadullayev, who was little-known in wider circles and who after the killing of Aslan Maskhadov succeeded him as President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, will hardly influence the situation in the republic. June 22, 2006 -- Oil spills and damage to sewerage systems are causing heavy pollution in Chechnya's rivers and lakes, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Russian officials warned today.

Yelena Kulikova of the WWF said that the dense mountain forests of war-torn Chechnya and other republics in the North Caucasus are "also in danger because of illegal logging."

Chechnya: A Look At Slain Leader's Legacy And Successor

By Liz Fuller

Chechnya - Chechen resistance president Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, undated
(RFE/RL)
PRAGUE, June 21, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, who was killed in a battle with combined Russian and Chechen forces in his hometown of Argun early on June 17, served just 15 months as president of the Chechen Republic Ichkeria. But over that period he succeeded in formalizing the organizational and logistical framework to expand the war into other North Caucasus republics. The resistance website chechenpress.org claimed on June 17 that under Sadulayev the resistance forces did not perpetrate a single attack on a civilian target that could substantiate the Russian argument that the resistance are "terrorists."

PRAGUE, June 21, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Chechen separatists have formally announced that a rebel field commander, Doku Umarov, has been appointed the leader of the self-declared Chechen separatist government.

Umarov succeeds Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, who was killed by pro-Russian forces on June 17.

A statement on a separatist website posted on June 21 said Umarov had taken over as president the day Sadulayev was killed.

Umarov, a long-time guerrilla leader, previously served as vice president in the self-declared government.
