President Sadulaev was attacked by more than 350 enemy troops

The DAYMOHK Information Agency reports some details of the battle in Argun, with reference to Ahmad Sardali, Chairman of the Political Council of the International Movement for De-colonisation of Caucasus.

“My friends from Argun just contacted me and told me about some details of the battle,” Mr. Sardali said. “This information originates from the immediate witnesses.”

By 23:00 of June 16, the area was blocked and surrounded by Russian armoured vehicles, located along the road from Shali to Djokhar (Grozny) up to the town centre, and along the bank of the Argun River.

The town inhabitants expected another “zachistka” (cleansing operation), but the Russians did nothing until very late at night.

Around 1 am on June 17, Russians began to storm the house where the President stayed. According to the witnesses, at least 300 Russian ...

Bill Weinberg: Chechen Sufi Revival —Between Russian Occupation And Wahhabis

Chechen Sufi revival —between Russian occupation and Wahhabis
Submitted by Bill Weinberg on Wed, 05/24/2006 - 21:57.

How interesting. In an implicit acknowledgement that their hardcore Islamophobe policies are backfiring in Chechya, the Russian authorities are embracing the indigenous peace-loving Sufi tradition as an alternative to the violently intransigent Wahhabism imported from the Arab world. But this could also backfire—as the Sufis themselves also seek independence from Russia, even if they aren't willing to blow up civilians to acheive it. The implications are "unclear" indeed. And while it is good to see the Kunta-Haji Sufis on page 4 of the New York Times, we're not sure they would appreciate the writer's depiction of their chanting as "grunts."

Statement of the Foreign Ministry of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

The Foreign Ministry of CHRI informs about the heroic death of Abdul-Halim Sadulaev, President of CHRI, in a battle against superior enemy forces.

Mr. Sadulaev has remained loyal to the cause of his predecessors Djokhar Dudayev, Zalimkhan Yandarbiyev and Aslan Maskhadov, who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the Chechen nation and for triumph of justice.

The government of the CRI expresses deep condolences to the President’s family, and to the whole Chechen nation. We have lost a dignified leader and one of the selfless champions of our right cause.

For the next three days, from June 18 to June 20, kyoman tezet mourning is declared among the Chechens, both inside and outside the CRI.

CHECHNYA: LIVING WITH A VENGEANCE

War has triggered a new kind of revenge killing, but peace could make it even worse.

By Amina Visayeva in Grozny.

In 2001, Aslan left the ranks of the Chechen rebel fighters and went home to his family in the village of Urus-Martan. But the pro-Moscow security agencies had long had him on their rebel blacklist, so the 26-year-old had to live under cover. By day, he hid in a barn belonging to his sister, and as soon as night fell, he clambered through courtyards to his own house where he spent the night.

That lasted until the day men in uniform burst into the house at dawn and found him at home. They led him outside half-dressed, pushed him into an armoured personnel carrier and drove off.

Aslan's relatives have had no news of him since. They say they have tried ...
