BRIEFS --IVANOV DEFENDS ULMAN VERDICT On June 6, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov defended last month's acquittal by a Rostov jury of GRU Captain Eduard Ulman and three subordinates on charges of murdering six Chechen civilians in January 2002. Ivanov also attacked Russia's chief military prosecutor, Colonel-General Aleksander Savenkov, for criticizing the verdict. Savenkov had denounced the verdict as bearing "no relation to the question of justice" and said no one doubted the four servicemen committed a crime and should be punished (see Chechnya Weekly, May 25). NTV quoted Ivanov as saying to Savenkov in response: "Without going into the details of the investigation, which has been going on for four years, I must say that I do not understand how it is possible to say that the acquittal of a group of servicemen in a jury trial has no relation to justice. 9/6/2005 Utter abuse causes protest About 150 residents of Borozdinovskaia, Shelkovskaia district, Chechnya, blocked the federal motorway Kavkaz ("Caucasus") on Wednesday, 8 June, at the crossing with the road from Kizlyar, Dagestan, to Grozny, Chechnya, not far from a police checkpoint, the press service of the Dagestani Ministry of Internal Affairs told Interfax. The people demanded that the eleven residents of the village detained last Sunday in a special operation conducted by servicemen of the Chechen special battalion Vostok ("East") under Sulim Yamadayev's command should be released. Besides, they demanded that those servicemen of the battalion who are guilty of the death of one village resident should be held accountable. The road was blocked for several hours. Representatives of the Kizlyar District Division of Internal Affairs, Dagestan's Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the republican government came to meet the protesters. He has told about the purposes and results of the trip in exclusive interview to “The Chechen Society" newspaper. - Mr. Richardson, you only returned from a trip to Ingushetiya and Chechnya. What was the goal of this visit? - As refugee coordinator at the Embassy, I work with UN agencies and other humanitarian organizations in providing assistance to the North Caucasus, as well as dealing with refugee issues in other parts of Russia. This means that I travel to Chechnya and Ingushetiya to meet with these organizations, government officials and internally displaced persons to monitor the programs we support and to discuss further needs.
