Chechen Leadership Renews Commitment to Conflict Resolution On the occasion of the debate on European Union (EU) Russia relations, a top level delegation of the Government of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, lead by the General Representative abroad of the Chechen President, Umar Khanbiev, presented the platform of the newly appointed president Abdul Khalim Sadulaev, successor of Aslan Maskhadov. "Bes" begins election campaign in Chechnya By Ruslan Isayev The parliamentary election campaign that got off to a start during the past week has already managed to make itself known by its first scandal when, after several years of absence, the republic saw Beslan Gantamirov, former Mayor of Grozny, and ex-Minister of Press and Information appear on the political scene. Gantamirov intends taking a very active part in the parliamentary elections scheduled for mid-November this year. By appearing on the scene, he is not only able to reshuffle the cards in the republic’s present leadership, but has also provided the basis for rumors about a possible change in the federal centre's policy in Chechnya. His appearance is connected with a recent incident that took place in his native village of Gekhi where at the end of May a unit of "Kadyrovites" conducted an unauthorized search of his brother’s house and confiscated several firearms. BRIEFS --IVANOV DEFENDS ULMAN VERDICT On June 6, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov defended last month's acquittal by a Rostov jury of GRU Captain Eduard Ulman and three subordinates on charges of murdering six Chechen civilians in January 2002. Ivanov also attacked Russia's chief military prosecutor, Colonel-General Aleksander Savenkov, for criticizing the verdict. Savenkov had denounced the verdict as bearing "no relation to the question of justice" and said no one doubted the four servicemen committed a crime and should be punished (see Chechnya Weekly, May 25). NTV quoted Ivanov as saying to Savenkov in response: "Without going into the details of the investigation, which has been going on for four years, I must say that I do not understand how it is possible to say that the acquittal of a group of servicemen in a jury trial has no relation to justice. June, 08, 2005 Chechens as a nightmare - 2 In the article "Chechens as a nightmare" we tried to give a brief report of expansion of the armed part of our people against great and small powers of the modernity: from China and India in the east, up to Mexico and the USA in the West, including such intermediate countries as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Some readers have fairly reproached us with their letters that we did not mentioned France, where Chechens were noticed at attempts to blow up the Eiffel Tower, Spain, where our good fellows eclipsed and rejected Basques from the ETA to the information boondocks, and also foggy Albion, where Chechens, according to the reports of local competent bodies, all the time were striving to poison the London underground with some chemical muck.
