CHECHNYA PEACE FORUM

Dear Friend

I am writing to you in my capacity as Director of the Chechnya Peace Forum. As an active campaigner for human rights for many years, not least in Bosnia during the early 1990s and over the past five years for the oppressed people of Chechnya, I have recently set-up a formal initiative in London to unite with other human rights activists called the Chechnya Peace Forum.

We are seeking to promote the cause of democracy and human rights in Chechnya, and bring the humanitarian crisis there to greater international attention. Over the last few months many people have offered support to the efforts of the Chechnya Peace Forum and I am now in a position to ask for your help with our first substantial piece of work.

PRAGUE, March 2, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Svetlana Gannushkina is the chairwoman of the Civic Assistance committee for refugees and heads of the migration and law network of the Memorial human rights center. RFE/RL Russian Service correspondent Irina Lagunina spoke with her in Prague.

RFE/RL: Some charitable organizations outside of Russia have had success collecting funds from individual contributors. Each may donate a very small amount of money, but it adds up to a lot. Can't this kind of approach work in Russia?

Svetlana Gannushkina: People in Russia don't believe that a real social organization can exist and not steal. That tradition is there, and it's very hard to convince people otherwise. It can even be funny ...

“Since 1999, hundreds of thousands of Chechens have been displaced and more than 100,000 killed - mostly civilians,” the letter read. “Disappearances, torture, rape, extra-judicial killings and the silencing of independent journalists and human rights defenders ...

Chechnya: The Turning Point That Wasn't

By Liz Fuller

RFE/RL -- News Analysis graphic, button, bug
(RFE/RL)
May 11, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Ten years ago, on May 12, 1997, the presidents of Russia and Chechnya, Boris Yeltsin and Aslan Maskhadov, met in the Kremlin to sign a treaty "on peace and the principles of Russian-Chechen relations" that was intended to draw a line under the 1994-96 war and preclude a resumption of armed conflict. But from the outset, powerful factions in both Moscow and Grozny sought to undermine both the peace treaty and a parallel intergovernmental agreement on cooperation.

Maskhadov proved unable to rein in renegade former fellow commanders who in the summer of 1999 invaded neighboring Daghestan and proclaimed an independent North Caucasus Islamic republic, and in October 1999 Russia launched a new war against Chechnya in the name of stamping out Islamic ...
