When Ramzan Kadyrov was named in early March to the post of Chechen prime minister, he publicly vowed to relinquish that post if he failed to bring about a radical improvement in living conditions within three months. With that deadline now imminent, the Chechen Ministry for Nationality Policy, Press and Information has reportedly commissioned a public opinion poll. All conceivable responses to the seven questions posed confirm that life in Chechnya has improved since Kadyrov assumed full control of the government.

Prague Watchdog begins publishing Russian transcripts of RFE/RL's Chechen broadcasts

(Prague, May 22) - This past week Prague Watchdog started publishing Russian transcripts of the Chechen-language daily broadcasts aired by the North Caucasus desk of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

Six times a week, for 20  minutes, RFE/RL broadcasts in the Chechen language for the Chechen audience. We select the parts most related to the conflict in Chechnya and publish their Russian translations on our website (www.watchdog.cz/rferl). The transcripts are usually posted the following day.

We believe this new on-line service will be useful for both Chechen and Russian readers as well as others interested in Chechnya and the Northern Caucasus who don't understand Chechen well or not at all. We hope it will contribute to bridge the information gap about Chechnya and help ...

Russian-Chechen Information Agency receives Gerd Butserius award
GERMANY, Hamburg. On May 19th, in Hamburg’s Town Hall, the Russian-Chechen Information Agency (RCHIA) received the "Free Press of Eastern Europe Award - 2006", named after Gerd Butserius. RCHIA Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director of the Society of Russian- Chechen Friendship Society, Stanislav Dmitriyevsky, participated in the presentation ceremony.

The RCHIA reported that the presentation was attended by a large number of politicians, public servants, businessmen and representatives of the media, who filled the entire town hall. Editor of the English-language version of RCHIA Oxana Chelysheva also participated.

Speeches to the gathering were delivered by ex-Chancellor of Germany Helmut Schmidt and editor of the weekly "Die Zite", Teo Zommer.

The RCHIA award document stated that: "The purpose of the Russian- Chechen Information Agency is the publication of truthful reporting about Chechnya and from Chechnya despite the fact that ...
