Paradoxoff Planet: Ramzan Kadyrov Cars

Ramzan Kadyrov - the president of the Chechen Republic (or Chechnya), aRussian autonomy burned down during ten years of war - is a big fan of sportscars. His car park is really fascinating. Especially, when you will calculate it’s value. While the Chechnya (of which Ramzan Kadyrov is intended to take care) is literally lying in ruins and strongly dependent on the Russian and international financial help, its leader’s autos collection worth more than a couple of million US dollars.

Is Chechen Leader Losing Moscow's Trust?
by Liz Fuller
Just two years since his inauguration as Chechen Republic head, the
chances that Ramzan Kadyrov will still occupy that post one year from
now appear to be dwindling fast. Informed observers believe the Russian
leadership has finally realized that Kadyrov constitutes both an
embarrassment and a potential threat.
Russian
President Dmitry Medvedev has pointedly restricted his contacts with
Kadyrov to the bare minimum, while during a meeting in late March,
Kadyrov's erstwhile patron, Vladimir Putin, subjected him to tough
questions about the use of federal funds. Just days later, a source in
the Russian presidential administration rejected as premature Kadyrov's
March 24 claim that on March 31 the Kremlin would formally announce the
end of the "counterterrorism operation" in Chechnya.

MOSCOW, April 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's foreign minister said on
Friday that the country is still waiting for information from the
United Arab Emirates on the March 28 shooting of a Russian army
commander.
Dubai police say Sulim Yamadayev, who led a battalion in Chechnya, was
shot dead in a car park near his luxury apartment, and have accused a
senior Chechen politician of organizing the killing. However,
Yamadayev's brother Isa insists that Sulim survived the assassination
attempt, and is still alive.
Speaking to reporters on a flight from Turkmenistan to Moscow, Foreign
Minister Sergei Lavrov said Russia is waiting to receive "any kind of
official report" on the murder ... >> full

Kadyrov's New Ichkeria
16 April 2009By Sergei Markedonov
At first glance, it would seem that the recent murder of Sulim Yamadayev in Dubai placed the "Chechnya problem" again in the spotlight after several years of being in the shadows. But the Dubai incident is unlikely to prompt world leaders to reconsider the issue of Chechen independence. Moreover, widespread human rights violations in Chechnya, which used to be a rallying point for opposition groups both within Russia and in the West, now attract far less attention than they once did.
Today, the discussion centers on the price for keeping Chechnya as a subordinate republic within the Russian Federation. How much control does Moscow really hold over Chechnya? Is Chechnya proving to be a case of the tail wagging the dog? The answers to these questions throw doubt on the effectiveness of the power vertical built by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Window On Eurasia: Moscow Concedes De Facto Control Of Chechnya To Kadyrov

Vienna, April 16 – By declaring its counter-terrorism operation in Chechnya over, the Russian government may gain a propaganda victory, but by this action, Moscow is effectively ceding even more control over the situation in that still restive North Caucasus republic to Ramzan Kadyrov, its irrepressible and often violent president. And while no one disputes that the level of violent resistance in Chechnya has declined in recent times, the way that has been achieved by Kadyrov, who has co-opted some of the rebels and engaged in a murderous campaign against others, points to more troubles for Moscow ahead, both in Chechnya itself and in the neighboring republics where violence is high and increasing. Consequently, even as the Russian government and Moscow media portray this as a victory for the center over the rebels, it may quickly prove ... >> full
