Maiming and injuries among Grozny construction workers

By Ruslan Isayev

GROZNY, Chechnya – There has been a sharp rise in injuries among construction workers engaged in the rebulding of Grozny. This has been directly confirmed by doctors at the reception ward of Grozny’s City Hospital No. 9, where the maimed and injured workers are taken.

The main reason for this situation is a complete failure to observe safety standards in construction work. Many people who have no experience of work on high-rise buildings are none the less hired to carry it out. It is quite frequently possible to see elderly women or young children carrying out painting work as they stand on scaffolding right at the top of the building. The scaffolding often lacks guard rails, with the result that people fall off.

Moreover, ...

''Chechnya: Russia's Second Afghanistan''

ussia's predicament in its rebellious republic of Chechnya is fast spinning out of control and is threatening to become Russia's second Afghanistan. After ten years of trying to control Chechnya primarily by military force, punctuated by a period of withdrawal from 1996 to 1999, Russia still has not been able to realize its aim of ruling the republic through a compliant local political leadership. At present, the situation in Chechnya is deteriorating so badly that Moscow is increasingly faced with a series of options, all of which are unfavorable to its strategic and security interests.

Located in the strategically significant Caucasus mountains, Chechnya's predominantly Sunni Muslim population has never been reconciled to its incorporation into the Russian empire in 1859. Chechens declared an autonomous republic in 1920 in the wake of the Russian Revolution, ...

Putin hands Chechnya to his ‘little Saddam’
Mark Franchetti, Moscow

As the owner of a pet tiger, and a man who likes to show off his rocket propelled grenade firing skills in public, Ramzan Kadyrov, 30, could hardly be expected to celebrate modestly when he is inaugurated as president of Chechnya this week.

It promises to be the most ostentatious event seen in the war-ravaged republic. Patricia Kaas, the French pop diva, has been invited to sing at the ceremony before more than 1,500 guests. The bill for the banquet alone, which will include caviar and champagne for non-Muslim guests, will run to nearly £400,000, an astronomical sum in a place impoverished by a decade of fighting and where the average salary is £100 a month.
The guest list is said to include Caroline Verkaik, the Kenyan entrant in the Mrs World ...
