As Russian sources reported on March 27, a mass outbreak of an unknown illness occurred in Chechnya's Shelkovskoi district in the middle of last December. The first registered cases appeared between December 7 and 19 among the students and staff of a middle school in the village of Starogladkovskaya. In all, 19 schoolchildren and three adults fell ill. The website of the Gazeta newspaper, Gzt.ru, reported on March 27 that the school children were diagnosed with poisoning. According to the website, a total of 87 people from the villages of Shelkovskaya, Shelkozavodskaya and Starogladovskaya were registered with symptoms that included suffocation, convulsions and "hysterical reactions." Shelkovskoi district head Khusein Nutaev claimed at the time that the cause of the illness was poisoning by a nerve or psychotropic gas. From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 4/7/2006 1:14 AM EC to issue more funds for conflict-affected in Chechnya 06.04.2006, 17.20 MOSCOW, April 6 (Itar-Tass) - The European Commission (EC) has approved providing 22 million euros in humanitarian aid for people affected by the conflict in Chechnya, an official of the Moscow EC office told Itar-Tass on Thursday. Beginning from the autumn of 1999, when the conflict stared anew, 196 million euros have been issued to Chechnya through the EC Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO). The EC is thus the largest donor in the region. Recipients of it are forced migrants and vulnerable groups of Chechnya, and forced migrants in Ingushetia and Dagestan. The funds are issued thorough ECHO whose head is European Commissioner Louis Michel. The new funds will be used to finance food distribution among people in the most vulnerable social conditions.
