Speech given by Ivar Amundsen on 23rd January 2006 in Oslo

CHECHENPRESS, the Department of letters

Dear Chechen and Norwegian friends,

Chechnya is a small country in the Caucasus between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The area is no larger than the county of Telemark in Norway. One million Chechens have lived here. Now the population is probably 700,000. The Russians have 200,000 troops deployed in the country.

For 400 years Russia has waged war against the  peoples of the Caucasus and frequently the war crimes have been so atrocious that they have been described as genocide.

After more than 60 years of war, Chechnya was in 1863 forced into suppression and occupied by the Russians. In February 1944, the despot Stalin deported the entire Chechen people of half a million individuals to Sibiria and Kazakhstan. Another 500.000 people from North Caucasus (Ingush, ...

New cases of pseudo-asthmatic syndrome registered in Chechnya
CHECHNYA, 10 March, Caucasus Times. New cases of pseudo-asthmatic syndrome have been registered among schoolchildren in Chechnya's Shelkovskiy District

To prevent the disease, the deputy director of [Moscow's] Serbskiy Institute of Forensic Psychiatry, Zurab Kikelidze, has addressed central TV channels, requesting not to broadcast TV reports showing ill people from Shelkovskiy District, a spokesperson for the republican children's hospital in Chechnya has told a Caucasus Times correspondent.

Doctors linked the following outbreak of a mysterious disease among schoolchildren and teachers in Chechnya directly to the reports on the ill children from Shelkovskiy District broadcast by individual TV channels.

"In our opinion, this has caused the new diseases," the chief doctor of the republican children's hospital, Sultan Alimkhadzhiyev, said.

Six new cases of illness among children and teachers were registered in Shelkovskiy District in the past period.

Sultan Alimkhadzhiyev said that ...

Demonstration against the war in Chechnya
RUSSIA, Moscow. On March 9th, in the Pushkin Square of area of Moscow, the Committee of Pacifist Actions and the Pacifist Club demonstrated against the war in Chechnya and in support of the delivery of the body of Aslan Maskadov to his relatives. A year ago, on March 8th, 2005, as a result of a special services operation, the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, Aslan Maskadov, perished.

A document handed out at the demonstration, called “A Year Without the Chance of Peace," noted: "Without waiting for the agreement of Russian authorities to begin negotiations... Maskadov declared a one-sided armistice. Apparently, this was the last straw for the Kremlin, which did not desire to resolve the Chechen conflict peacefully. Specifically, it was during this armistice that Maskadov was killed. Thus, the Russian authorities finally sealed ...

A Mystery Malady in Chechnya
The official diagnosis for 93 violently ill victims, mostly children, is the stress of chronic fear. Parents and some doctors have doubts.
By Kim Murphy, Times Staff Writer
March 10, 2006

SHELKOVSKAYA, Russia — It started just after the midafternoon recess. As they lined up to return to class, Zareta Chimiyeva saw a girl in front of her collapse and begin convulsing wildly. Only a few minutes later, Zareta was at her desk when she smelled "a bad smell," and started feeling ill.

She rushed out of the classroom but made it only as far as the stairs. "Darkness surrounded me, and there was darkness in my eyes, and I fell," said the 12-year-old from this small town in eastern Chechnya.

When Zareta woke up in a hospital, it took three adults to hold her down. She was thrashing and clutching her throat, unable ...
