IN the wake of the recent bombing of Moscow's Domodedovo airport, there were calls by some New Straits Times readers to be impartial in condemning acts of terrorism. I agree.

Therefore, it is only fitting that these readers spare a thought to the fate of the people of Chechnya, who themselves are victims of terrorism -- state terrorism.

The terrorism visited upon Chechens are not isolated cases or confined to an airport or two, but almost daily occurrences.

Russia is now crying foul over the backlash for the carnage it wreaked in tiny Chechnya.

Chechnya is reportedly undergoing a period of calm -- achieved through sheer brute force brought about by a giant superpower on a country which in size is but a tiny speck.

But fighting may well erupt again. And when that happens, the ones bearing the brunt of the Russian force will be the ...

World Chechnya Day | 23rd February 2011

23rd February is World Chechnya Day. It commemorates the dignity and resiliance of a people who, against all odds, refused to be erased from existence.

On 23 February 1944, Stalin ordered the deportation of the entire Chechen and Ingush population to Central Asia. More than half of the 500,000 people who were forcibly transported died in transit or in massacres committed by Soviet troops. Those who survived the journey were left to face starvation and disease in the harsh winters of Siberia and Central Asia.

Overnight, Chechnya and Ingushetia were emptied of their native inhabitants, and within days an entire people had been erased from their ancestral land. Every reference to Chechnya was removed from official maps, records and encyclopaedias.

Sixty years after the event, in 2004, the European Parliament passed a motion to recognise this catastrophe as Genocide.

As director, Fiennes modernizes Shakespeare's 'Coriolanus'

BERLIN — For his debut as a director, Ralph Fiennes has pulled the Shakespearean tragedy "Coriolanus" into the present-day world of 24-hour news coverage of riots and politics.

Fiennes takes the lead as a great but proud and flawed Roman general in the movie, which had its premiere Monday at the Berlin film festival.

He stars alongside Vanessa Redgrave, who plays his iron-willed mother, Volumnia and Gerard Butler, cast as Coriolanus' sworn enemy, Tullus Aufidius.

Fiennes said he had thought about making a film of "Coriolanus" — a tale of heroism, political manipulation, unrest and revenge — since appearing in the play on stage a decade ago. He gave some thought to setting the movie in ancient Rome or in the 19th century.

The ringleader of Russian minions in the occupied Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, declared that there is only one leader in Russia - and that is Putin, reported RIA Novosti.

At the same time, the Russian stooge boasted that he was a "good warrior".

"For me, I will not be in the ministry of defense. I am a good warrior. I can lead a unit, and I can execute tasks", RIA Novosti cited Kadyrov as saying in a broadcast by Russian NTV entitled "Unreal Politics".

Let's recall thereupon that Kadyrov has been never seen in combat. He was a personal driver of his father in a NIVA car. A myth that Kadyrov fought against the Russian occupiers was fully invented by the FSB and is still spread by this terrorist group.
