Sixty two years ago, on 23 February 1944, Stalin ordered the forcible deportation of the Chechen, Ingush and other nations of the North Caucasus to Central Asia. More than half of the people who were to be forcibly transported died in transit or in massacres committed by Soviet troops. Those ...

FEBRUARY 23 THE DEPORTATION DAY
23.02.2006 - 00:55:50

´´On the 23 February 1944 the Soviet Union set in motion the immediate deportation of the entire Chechen and Ingush peoples to the steppes of Central Asia. In the depths of winter they were subjected to summary massacres and food shortages: it was a solution no less final or less brutal that the one being inflicted at the same time in Europe on the Jews. By conservative estimates half of the population died; the proportion that perished is probably much greater...´´

In early January 1944, tens of thousands of NKVD troops had started to arrive in the tiny mountainous republic, and fanned out to almost every settlement in the region.

On Red Army Day, February 23, in every town and village the men were summoned to meetings in the local Soviet building.

None suspected the calamity that was ...

(Part 6)

Kaisar Moro, specially for CHECHENPRESS, 15.02.06.

Chapter 18. Oasis of Shamil

The feeling of strange dispassionateness from ongoing irrational events has captivated Shamil entirely. He very much appreciated his life. He did not cling to it. And did not wish to sell his life cheaper - no!

This feeling was coming from the depth of his being. The Depths are so filled with sense, that all the events of this world might not be displayed on these waves even by a calm. The circuit of the vital facts itself has determined his binding to a place and time of today's life.

But loneliness - oh my God, how it was unbearable!! Brothers with whom he has perceive the secrets of life and death, and without whom, by virtue of the importance of experienced together the events, he could not imagine ...

Chechnya: Council of Europe Condemns Russian Methods
On 25 January 2006, after much inaction, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, in its debate on the Chechen situation, finally passed a resolution condemning the methods employed by Russian security forces in Chechnya and harshly criticised the Committee of Ministers, the Council of Europe's executive body, for its passivity in the face of the continuing human rights abuses in the province. The resolution, accompanied by a recommendation, has yet to be approved by the Council of Ministers, but will probably bring about little change.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) can no longer abide by the wait-and-see attitude of its executive body as Europe’s institutional watchdog of human rights, democracy, and the state of the law. In rebuking the Council of Ministers, PACE sent a clear message that could be read ...

Anemia widespread among Chechen schoolchildren

By Umalt Chadayev

CHECHNYA – The majority of schoolchildren in Chechnya are sick with a variety of illnesses, the most prevalent being anemia.

Chechen doctors are deeply disturbed by this; according to them, anemia represents a danger to the entire younger generation.

An employee at the Ministry of Health said that at the end of last year, doctors tested the children in the secondary school No.2 in Kurchaloy (district center in south-east Chechnya) and “the results were shocking as more than 90% were anemic.”

He regards the situation as “very serious” since anemia is characterized by a reduction of hemoglobin in the bloodstream. General symptoms among the tested youngsters included “fatigue, poor concentration, general weakness, headaches, and unpleasant sensations around the heart.” Of all the schools tested in one district, ...
