Kadyrov follows in steps of Shanibov and Basaev
25/12/2009 04:25

The Club of Experts was not surprised by involvement of the Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov into anti-Georgian campaign launched in Russia. After all, Russian security services have a rich tradition of playing off Caucasian peoples against each other. They never bothered to change methods. Old, well-proven methods almost always succeeded. Neither did they ever lack those who implemented their plans. Though, as a rule, "pupils" of Russian security services after some time usually went against their masters.

Today Kadyrov (hopefully without comprehension) has agreed to play the same role as Musa Shanibov, Shamil Basaev and several other North Caucasian leaders played before the start of the ...

Once Upon a Time in the Provinces

Odnazhdy v provintsii
(Russia) A Central Partnership, Tan-Film Studio production, with the support of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography. Produced by Ruben Dishdishyan, Aram Movsesyan Sergey Danielyan, Yuri Moroz. Directed, written by Katya Shagalova.

With: Yulia Peresild, Elvira Bolgova, Aleksandr Golubev, Leonid Bichevin, Aidys Shoigu, Lyubov Tolkalina, Natalya Soldatova, Aleksandr Skotnikov, Sakhat Dursunov.

The scars of Chechnya mark the bodies, minds and destinies of the young men and women at the center of "Once Upon a Time in the Provinces," Katya Shagalova's contemporary saga of provincial apathy. On the surface, nothing seems particularly Chekhovian about this group of twentysomething proles who drink, fight and screw their days away. Yet the atmosphere of febrile discontent that hangs over the town feels eerily familiar; factory workers and generals' daughters replace Chekhov's aristocrats and military men, while skinheads sub for the ...

Jordan Times: Russia’s Renegade Puppet

Russia’s renegade puppet

By Dmitry Shlapentokh

Ramzan Kadyrov, the president of Chechnya, recently proposed to Ahmed Zakaev, a leader of the nationalistic and comparatively moderate Chechen opposition, that he return to Chechnya. Kadyrov promised Zakaev amnesty and various positions ranging from director of the local theatre to minister of culture.

Zakaev looked ready to accept the proposal. His position in the nationalist opposition was weak. There seem to be few, if any, fighters in Chechnya who recognise him as commander; his recent attempt to send an emissary to create a fighting unit directly under his command was not successful.

At the same time, Zakaev maintained rather friendly relations with Kadyrov, whose achievements - making Chechnya practically independent - he implicitly acknowledged. The Kremlin supposedly would not have opposed the deal.

But although Zakaev was one of the most moderate members of the Chechen resistance, an amnesty for him needed the Kremlin’s approval, and he does ...

IWPR: Chechens Mark Ten Years of Exile

Chechens Mark Ten Years of Exile

A decade after they fled their homeland, Chechens in Georgia still fear it is unsafe to go back.

By Lizaveta Zhahanina in Tbilisi (CRS No. 524, 18-Dec-09)

Chechen refugees in Georgia, marking the tenth anniversary of their flight, scorn Russian suggestions the war is over and say they will only go home when the bombing and shooting have stopped.

Kameta Temirbulatova, a middle-aged woman wearing the traditional Chechen dress of a headscarf and long skirt, said refugees in Georgia’s remote Pankisi valley suffer from homesickness and poverty. They are also stung by Russian accusations that they harbour al-Qaeda extremists.

The valley is home to about 800 Chechen refugees, who have linguistic ties to the ethnic Kists who make up most of the local population.

Most refugees arrived in Pankisi in November or December 1999, fleeing the second phase of Russia’s war in Chechnya, which was launched in October 1999.

Muslim Revival Brings Polygamy, Camels To Chechnya

Muslim revival brings polygamy, camels to Chechnya

Wed, Dec 16th, 2009 10:15 pm BdST

By Amie Ferris-Rotman

GROZNY, Russia, Dec 16 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Adam, 52, keeps his three wives in different towns to stop them squabbling, but the white-bearded Chechen adds he might soon take a fourth.

"Chechnya is Muslim, so this is our right as men. They (the wives) spend time together, but do not always see eye to eye," said the soft-spoken pensioner, who only gave his first name.

Hardline Kremlin-backed leader Ramzan Kadyrov is vying with insurgents for authority in a land ravaged by two secessionist wars with Moscow. Each side is claiming Islam as its flag of legitimacy, each reviles the other as criminal and blasphemous.

Wary of the dangers of separatism in a vast country, Moscow watches uneasily as central power yields to Islamic tenets. It must chose what it might see as the lesser of two evils.

Though polygamy is illegal ...
