Prague Watchdog’s correspondent has learned from talking to students that the Institute’s vice-principal, Sharpuddin Zaurbekov, has been installed as its acting head. Ibragim Kerimov, who had filled the post for the past several years, was dismissed in the second half of November this year as part of the morality crackdown (“struggle for morality”) imposed by the republic’s government. Students say that the step was taken after President Ramzan Kadyrov, on a visit to the Institute a few weeks ago, saw that Kerimov’s secretary was not wearing a headscarf. "The ... >> full

GROZNY. Dec 5 (Interfax) - Ramzan Kadyrov is not going to leave his post as Chechen President over his election to the Russian State Duma.
"Indeed, I was number one on the United Russia regional list for the State Duma elections. Everyone knows the result. The people have unconditionally backed the course led by the country's and Chechen governments. Almost 100% of voters in Chechnya voted for United Russia. I take it not only as a result of the elections, but also as an answer to the question of confidence in us and as an assessment of the reforms occurring in Chechnya and the country," Kadyrov told Interfax on Wednesday.

One independent election observer described the results as "freakish," while the Kremlin and election officials explained that "special traditions" had motivated voters to turn out en masse. In Chechnya, 99.5 percent of voters went to the polls Sunday, said Ismail Baikhanov, the head of the republic's elections committee. "578,039 out of 580,918 registered voters took part in the elections," he said, Interfax reported. United Russia received 99.36 percent of the vote. This was the highest vote for United Russia in the country, where overall turnout was 63 percent, and about 64 percent of votes were cast for the party. Nationwide turnout was 56 percent in the last Duma ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/1/2007 2:05 PM And now Kadyrov handles the press issue Caharkala - President Ramzan Kadyrov of the Russia's puppet government in Chechnya said that he would transfer high standards of press to Chechnya from Russia, a country that already has some notorious prestige in its handling of press freedom. What Kadyrov tends to describe as improvement of press quality differs largely from how journalists tend to perceive it. Journalists think that the new standards will rather be intended to restrict journalists in their freedom to choose subjects to cover. Kadyrov met with a group of journalists working in Chechnya on the News Day of November 26. Although he acknowledged that journalism was a kind of job with the same level of difficulty and danger as security forces, Kadyrov further said that the government would conduct a study on magazines as well as newspapers of Chechnya so ... >> full
