Chechen Envoy Gets Sympathetic Reception At European Parliament Pro-independence Chechens had a rare opportunity today to rally support for their cause in the European Union. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) representing countries surrounding the Baltic Sea received Akhayat Idogov in Strasbourg. Idogov is the head of the foreign relations committee of what the European Union considers to be the last freely elected Chechen parliament. Idogov said he was received sympathetically in Strasbourg. And an MEP instrumental in organizing Idogov's visit said deputies supportive of the Chechen independence movement will attempt to formally raise the issue in the European Parliament. Idogov's meeting in Strasbourg today is a sign of the changing times. The European Parliament has shed the sluggish detachment that has previously characterized much of its relations with the bloc's eastern neighbors, especially Russia. Chechen gov't head injured in Moscow car accident
RBC, 18.11.2005, Moscow 10:42:03.Head of the Chechen government Sergei Abramov has been injured in a car accident in Moscow. His condition is said to be serious but stable, NTV television reported. Abramov was on his way to the airport to leave for Chechnya, where he was expected to meet presidential envoy to the South Federal District Dmitry Kozak, when his car collided with a truck. The official was seriously injured and has already undergone surgery on his liver and kidneys.
According to preliminary data, the truck driver was responsible for the accident.
