Statement by Zhalauddin Saralyapov, the Chairman of the Parliament of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

SIA CHECHENPRESS, 14 October 2007

I was co-opted into the ChRI’s State Committee for Defence (Majlisul Shura), which is an advisory body, by the Decree No 066 of 20 January 2006 by late President Abdul-Halim Sadulaev. Knowing this, and acting in the interest of the Chechen ...

Passport checks among civilians begin in Grozny

By Ruslan Isayev

GROZNY, Chechnya - Passport checks are being conducted among civilians in Grozny. Groups of officers from district police stations are checking all tenants present in apartments and private houses at the time of the check, and recording their passport details. The policemen are accompanied by passport service officials.

The police are taking suspicious individuals to the local police stations. Particular attention is being given to citizens who do not have city residence permits.

On Thursday, a similar check was carried out in Grozny’s residential compounds (mikrorayony). At 5am police officers, divided into several groups and armed with pens and notebooks, began to make the rounds of the high-rise apartment blocks along Tukhachevsky, Kosior, Dyakov and Ionesiane streets, which caused a great commotion among residents ...

Chechnya prepares for the end of Ramadan

By Ruslan Isayev

CHECHNYA – Since the beginning of the final week of Ramadan many Chechens have been rushing to the republic’s numerous markets to buy food to make the special dishes for the holiday which ends the fast. It is no exaggeration to say that this day makes everyone equal – rich and poor, since everyone tries to serve up the very best, regardless of expense. The table of a poor family will be no different from that of a rich one.

The biggest problem in the month of Ramadan is the increase in the prices of staple foods. Despite a call from Chechnya’s Mufti ...
