Statement by the ChRI Prosecutor General’s Office

SIA CHECHENPRESS, December 27, 2007

Recently we have witnessed an increase in subversive acts against the foundations of the Chechen statehood, both on the part of the Russian authorities and on the part of well-known individuals who have quite recently tried to overthrow the ChRI government institutions in a criminal attempt to violate the fundamental principles of the Chechen Constitution. In the meantime, thousands of Chechen refugees, temporarily resident in Europe, are desperately in need of legal assistance from the Chechen authorities in order to withstand arbitrary treatment and bureaucracy at the hands of immigration services in several European countries.

The Office of the Prosecutor General considers it of primary importance that the numerous charges against Russia’s representatives who have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity on Chechen soil should be studied in detail.

Practice of extortion at „Kavkaz“ checkpoint stops

By Umalt Chadayev

CHECHNYA – Renewed bribery at the sadly well-known „Kavkaz“ checkpoint located on the administrative border between Chechnya and Ingushetia has stopped again after the Federal Security Service (FSB) intervened.

„Ever since the very beginning of the war, the „Kavkaz“ checkpoint has been notorious for its policemen collecting exorbitant tribute from people wishing to pass through it. A self-styled „tariff“ of fees ranging from 10 to 50 roubles was even developed. The practice had continued almost until this past summer when policemen, apparently from the Kirov region, were deployed at the checkpoint. At that moment everything changed and the bribe-taking stopped. „They‘ve even hung up a notice warning that an attempt to offer a bribe is a criminal offence,“ says Souleiman, a 47-year-old mini-bus ...

Residents of Chechnya are most frequent refuge applicants in Belgium

Thirteen percent of total applicants for political asylum in Belgium are
residents of Chechnya.

This is the result of the monitoring conducted by the authorities of
Belgium who had decided to find out citizens of what countries are most
frequent applicants for asylum, the "Echo Moskvy" Radio reports with
reference to the RIA "Novosti".

Apart from natives of Chechnya, most applications for granting refuge in
Belgium have been filed by citizens of Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

of applicants for a refuge from Chechnya in France has sharply exceeded
the usual number. As a result, the refugees from Chechnya found
themselves in awfully hard living conditions.

We remind you that the number of citizens of Russia seeking shelter in
Poland has also went up, and mainly due to those who live in Chechnya
and Ingushetia. Only ...
