UN representative in Russia: We will seek easier access for UN personnel to Chechnya

Acting UN Resident Coordinator for Russia Ercan Murat offers his assessment of the situation in the North Caucasus and comments on UN plans to support development in the region in an interview with Interfax.

The United Nation's danger rating for Chechnya may be lowered in the near future, Murat said.

The UN office in Russia is seeking a revision of Chechnya's danger rating, which currently stands at 'Phase Five' - the highest level, Murat said. Lowering this rating is key to expanding the UN's presence in the region, making it easier for UN personnel to enter the region and enhancing the efficiency of their work there, he said.

A decision on the issue is a matter for the UN Secretary General, Murat said, adding that he hopes that the ...

"Islam bans the self-destructive hunger-strikes"

Iakub Sulumkhajiev, the student, Cairo
CHECHENPRESS, the Department of letters, 17.01.06.

It is already four weeks that we with fraction of certain passion have been keeping an eye on the hunger-strike of the President of the International Association "Peace and human rights" S-E. Ibragimov and on the creative activity of certain organizations and individuals using this action for their own approval.

Not at all belittling the zeal of this person known for his firmness in appeals for human rights, sharing his requirements, I would like to notice modestly: does not the good business turn into the political show which is warmed up by inadmissible game in life and death.

For the first two weeks people being in the state of worrying and sympathizing, had been indignant at ignoring by politicians of PACE, Europarliament the dying at their threshold already elderly ...

Ruzma - Chechen Calendar

Zelamkha Isaev, CHECHENPRESS, 21.01.06

"Calendar - the calculation of days and months in the year" - is said in the "explanatory dictionary of the Russian language"
S.I.Ozhegova.

Was there the same in the Chechens? Yes. This confirms at least the facts, which exist in old men to this day. To the Moslem period it was limited to the names of months, to phenomena of nature and to working human activity. For example: Ianan iukh - the beginning of winter, bardal Iaza - the end of the winter, okhanan khan - the time of tillage, mangalan khan - the time of mowing. But after the adoption of Islam everything began to be defined more concretely with the references to the Arab calendar, with the precise names of the months (see table).
