IN the wake of the recent bombing of Moscow's Domodedovo airport, there were calls by some New Straits Times readers to be impartial in condemning acts of terrorism. I agree.
Therefore, it is only fitting that these readers spare a thought to the fate of the people of Chechnya, who themselves are victims of terrorism -- state terrorism.
The terrorism visited upon Chechens are not isolated cases or confined to an airport or two, but almost daily occurrences.
Russia is now crying foul over the backlash for the carnage it wreaked in tiny Chechnya.
Chechnya is reportedly undergoing a period of calm -- achieved through sheer brute force brought about by a giant superpower on a country which in size is but a tiny speck.
But fighting may well erupt again. And when that happens, the ones bearing the brunt of the Russian force will be the Chechen civilians.
Russian public reaction to their army's atrocities, with a few notable exceptions, has always been apathy at best or approval at the worst.
While I am not condoning the airport bombing, is it surprising that some people resort to such action knowing that those responsible for the widespread destruction and misery in their homeland will never be punished?
