Former rebel turned Kremlin loyalist, Ramzan Kadyrov, has called on Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin to run for president in the 2012 election and serve in the presidential post for life.
"I want him (Putin) to be the president as long as he lives,” Kadyrov told Newsweek magazine on Sunday. The president of Chechnya added that he wants Putin to win the 2012 vote.
Chechnya’s Moscow-backed strongman, Ramzan Kadyrov, is the first regional leader to demand Putin’s political comeback as the Russian president.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has given a strong hint that he would run for president in 2012, a step that would almost certainly give him a third round Russia’s president.
Putin is the dominant partner in a ruling tandem with President Dmitry Medvedev. The Russian constitution prevented Putin from running in 2008 after serving a second consecutive four-year term as president. He will however be free to run again in 2012.
Medvedev introduced constitutional amendments in late 2008 to extend future presidential terms to six years.
The 57-year-old Putin and 44-year-old Medvedev have suggested that one of them will run for president in 2012, and that they will agree in advance which one it will be.
