Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov may change the name of his official title in September in case the Chechen parliament approves this initiative, the speaker of the Chechen parliament said on Saturday.

"After the discussion we have come to conclusion that the appropriate name will be the shirt one - 'regional head'," Dukuvaha Abdurakhmanov said.

Earlier Kadyrov sent a letter to the Chechen republic's parliament with a proposal to change his official title and called on to "end the parade of regional presidents".

Kadyrov said there should only be one president in Russia and regional heads should have different titles. The vast majority of regional leaders are known as governors, but most of Russia's 21 republics have presidents.

A Kremlin source said that the idea to devise a common title for regional heads has been under discussion for a long time, and that the process may be launched now on a voluntary basis.

The renaming will cost the Chechen budget from 3 to 10 million rubles, the speaker said.

Heads of 13 Russian republics currently hold the official title of president. In May 2005 the presidential title was scrapped in the North Caucasus republic of North Ossetia. In 2008 the regional parliament wanted to rename the highest executive post in the Volga Republic of Tatarstan, but the then president of Tatarstan opposed the move.
