ChRI Foreign Minister Usman Ferzauli’s comments on the Georgian President M.Saakashvili’s speech at the UN General Assembly

Events in the Caucasus have their own stable dynamics with the tone being set by the interests of many different actors. To our regret, Russia’s leaders do not leave room for any hopes that Russia plans to abandon its own imperial ambitions in the near future. This is a very dangerous scenario when a country has lost its ‘former glory’ and wants to regain it. To achieve this it employs old methods of pitching nations against one another: dividing them along ethnic lines, religious beliefs or interests. The result is a greater alienation among different nations of the Caucasus.

We could debate this issue ad infinitum but what is encouraging is the fact that leaders of some countries in the Caucasus courageously resist this new Russian expansionism.

We greatly welcome the brave stance of the President of sovereign Georgia his Excellency ‘Emis Pasadari ‘ Mikheil Saakashvili who was the first person to speak from the distinguished podium of the UN General Assembly in an unbiased way about the consequences of the disastrous war Russia is waging against our small country. President M.Saakashvili’s action reveals a profound understanding of the essence and the consequences of this war. It is quite clear that the continuous resistance put up by Ichkeriya’s fighters has delayed for 15 years a new Russian aggression against sovereign Georgia at the cost of a quarter of a million lives of Chechen citizens. We therefore consider the speech given by the President of the brotherly Georgian nation an expression of boundless gratitude.

It goes without saying that we have repeatedly informed all the interested parties about the fact that the ‘Russian solution to the Chechen issue’ was a mere prelude to further aggressive actions by Russia.

History will judge whether our words have been heeded. We do think, however, that the Chechens have sacrificed themselves at the altar for the freedom for the entire Caucasus. We are rightfully proud of this fact and we welcome the Georgian leader for providing his own unequivocal analysis of the events in the ChRI.

ChRI Foreign Minister Usman Ferzauli
