On 17-18 January the ChRI Cabinet of Ministers’ Chairman Akhmed Zakaev met in London with the representatives of the action group comprised of a number of Euro MPs and representatives of international NGOs to create an ‘Association of European MPs in support of the Chechen people’s right to self-determination’. During the meeting they discussed the human rights situation in Chechnya and the crimes perpetrated by the Russian military against the civilian population of the republic. Akhmed Zakaev drew the attention of the participants to the fact that as a result of the infamous discriminatory policy of forcing the largest possible number of indigenous people out of Chechnya, there has been a steadily growing stream of Chechen refugees fleeing to Europe year after year. A. Zakaev also stressed that the responsibility for the situation in Chechnya and in the North Caucasus, as well as the situation with IDPs, lies with the European politicians as well, who for the last 10 years have been pursuing the policy of keeping the Chechen tragedy under wraps.
Participants of the meeting agreed that there was a planned ethnic cleansing of the Chechen territory occupied by Russia, and expressed their firm conviction that the Chechen issue should be considered not as a merely humanitarian issue but as a political one.
