Statement by the ChRI Prosecutor General’s Office

SIA CHECHENPRESS, December 27, 2007

Recently we have witnessed an increase in subversive acts against the foundations of the Chechen statehood, both on the part of the Russian authorities and on the part of well-known individuals who have quite recently tried to overthrow the ChRI government institutions in a criminal attempt to violate the fundamental principles of the Chechen Constitution. In the meantime, thousands of Chechen refugees, temporarily resident in Europe, are desperately in need of legal assistance from the Chechen authorities in order to withstand arbitrary treatment and bureaucracy at the hands of immigration services in several European countries.

The Office of the Prosecutor General considers it of primary importance that the numerous charges against Russia’s representatives who have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity on Chechen soil should be studied in detail.

In these circumstances the ChRI Office of the Prosecutor General considers it its priority to do the following:

    * Accumulate criminal cases against Russia, won by Chechen citizens in the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights;
    * Work with Chechen citizens temporarily resident in the EU and other countries in order to provide them with legal aid;
    * Work with completed documents testifying to the nature of the events in the ChRI in the period from 1999 until today;
    * Start criminal proceedings upon attempts to abolish the Chechen state in the period between 1999 to 2007.

The ChRI Office of the Prosecutor General declares that it will adhere to the fundamental provisions of the ChRI Consitution and laws of the Chechen state.
