A drunken driver collided with a motorcade carrying Chechen President Alu Alkhanov as he returned to Chechnya, killing an escorting security officer and critically injuring four others, law enforcement officials said today.
Alkhanov was unhurt in the incident, which took place in the neighbouring region of Ingushetia this morning, the Ingush Interior Ministry said. The driver of the car was also taken to hospital.
Preliminary reports showed the driver was drunk when his car crossed into the incoming lane near the Ingush capital Nazran and collided with three cars in Alkhanov’s motorcade. One of Alkhanov’s security officer was killed and four others were taken to hospital, the ministry said.
The ministry said a preliminary investigation indicated that the collision was accidental.
Last November, Chechnya’s then-prime minister, Sergei Abramov, was seriously injured when a truck collided with his car outside Moscow.
Officials insisted the incident was a traffic accident but suspicions persisted after that it was an attempt to force Abramov out of power.
Abramov later resigned and was replaced ultimately with Ramzan Kadyrov, the deputy prime minister who heads a widely feared paramilitary security force that has been blamed for mass abductions of civilians.
Also in Chechnya, a 12-year-old girl was killed yesterday when guests attending a wedding in the capital Grozny began firing automatic weapons in a traditional welcome for the bride.
The girl was standing on a balcony outside her apartment when she was hit by at least one bullet and she died later in a hospital, the Chechen Interior Ministry said.
Meanwhile, two people scavenging for scrap metal in a southern region were killed when an explosive device detonated, the ministry said.
Explosives, land mines and undetonated weaponry are scattered through the region and civilians are often maimed or killed accidentally. http://www.breakingnews.ie/world/?jp=CWIDGBQLOJMH&rss=yes#
