EC to issue more funds for conflict-affected in Chechnya

MOSCOW, April 6 (Itar-Tass) - The European Commission (EC) has approved providing 22 million euros in humanitarian aid for people affected by the conflict in Chechnya, an official of the Moscow EC office told Itar-Tass on Thursday.
Beginning from the autumn of 1999, when the conflict stared anew, 196 million euros have been issued to Chechnya through the EC Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).
The EC is thus the largest donor in the region.
Recipients of it are forced migrants and vulnerable groups of Chechnya, and forced migrants in Ingushetia and Dagestan.
The funds are issued thorough ECHO whose head is European Commissioner Louis Michel.
The new funds will be used to finance food distribution among people in the most vulnerable social conditions.
The money is also intended for support of primary and vocational education, anti-mine safety training, a programme of socio-psychological care for people, especially children who were injured during the military actions, improvement of the health care system, the water supply and sanitation in Chechnya, including water deliveries in Grozny and repair of private houses in Chechnya.
In Chechnya, a republic of 800,000, about 200,00 people are in category of forced migrants, many of whom have returned from neighbouring Ingushetia.
Life conditions in Chechnya, especially in its capital Grozny, are hard, and many of people who return find their houses destroyed.
Security conditions are still lacking in Chechnya, especially in the south of it.
