MosNews Preparations for the first ever major rock festival in the North Caucasus, initially scheduled for July 5 but cancelled due to security fears, are nearing completion. The event called Phoenix: Resurrection of Life is due to take place in Chechnya’s second city of Gudermes on Tuesday.
“This is a landmark event for our republic. Not just music lovers but all sensible people, who realize that life is really returning to Chechnya in full if the time has come to stage a festival such as this, are looking forward to it,” Sergey Abramov, prime minister of the embattled republic and the head of the music festival’s organization committee was quoted by Itar-Tass as saying.
The stage, seating for spectators and performers’ tents have already been installed at the city’s stadium, where the six-hour extravaganza will be staged, Abramov said.
Media interest in the event has been unprecedented with more than 30 Russian and foreign reporters already accredited to cover it. The festival venue and all major facilities in the city are being guarded round-the-clock, with some 3,000 Chechen police to maintain order at the stadium and ensure the safety of the audience on the day, Abramov said.
After more than 15,000 tickets for the July Phoenix festival had been sold and huge sums of money spent on the event’s preparations and advertising, local authorities cancelled the event amid of fears that it may be attacked by guerillas http://www.mosnews.com/news/2005/11/07/rockinchechnya.shtml
