On the simulation of elections in the Chechen Republic

Mr Dimitrij RUPEL

Mr Josep BORRELL FONTELLES
PRESIDENT, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
ON THE SIMULATION OF ELECTIONS IN THE CHECHEN REPUBLIC
STATEMENT
The Russian leadership tries to justify its crimes committed during the seven-year war in Chechnya by simulating "Chechen parliamentary elections " and to mislead the public. Having killed over a hundred thousand Chechens, having made a large part of the population leave Chechnya for Russia, Central Asia and Western Europe, having imposed the most violent criminal puppet regime on the occupied territory, Russia, following the 1968 example of Czechoslovakia, wants to demonstrate to the world "normalisation of the situation ".
It makes no sense to refer to freedom of expression, press, association, and other fundamental rights, as well as freedom of choice and right of self-determination in Chechnya where a person 's right to life is not respected, which is proved by the recent Russian imperialistic intentions in Abkhazia, North Ossetia, and Transdiestr.
Free elections were organised in Chechnya in 1997, and the Russian Army turned their outcome into destruction and human blood in 1999-2005. We believe that international organisations and you personally must give a legal and moral evaluation of the situation and prevent Russia from profaning the right of the Chechen nation to self-determination. If this is not undertaken, Russian coercion and illegitimacy will be justified, which will mean that the European international organisations refuse to protect humanistic interests.
We believe that you will hear the cry for help of the Chechen people from the villages that are under continuous Russian artillery fire. This is your historical duty and historical conscience.
Respectfully,
Chairman Rytas Kupсhinskas
