6.05.2005 Flood situation aggravates in Chechnya because of heavy rains
Torrential rains have aggravated the flood situation in a number of Chechen districts where house of several hundred people have been inundated.
«Over 130 rescuers and 37 machinery units have been sent to liquidate the flooding aftermath and rescue people to 10 districts of the republic, including the Oktyabrsky, Leninsky and Zavodskoy districts of the capital Grozny. Rescue operations are carried out under the command of Chechen Interior Minister Ruslan Avtayev," the ministry spokesman Akhmed Davliyev told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
According to him, 21 houses with 205 tenants are now in the inundation area in the Voikovo, Kalinin and Vorovsky settlements in the Grozny suburb.
The Chechen government has formed a special group for the prevention and liquidation of floods. According to specialists, floods are threatening a number of northern and southern districts of the republic.
The situation is the worst in the Shelkovskoi district. Settlements of the neighbouring Naursky district, as well as Kurchaloi, Nozhai-Yurt and Shali districts are also threatened.
Chechen government sources said, «The water level in the Sunzha River has reached the mark of 400 centimetres (420 cm is the critical mark) as a result of long rains and intensive snow melting in the mountains in the Grozny area."
