Russia in the News: August 31, 2009

Theotherrussia.org provides a glimpse into the topical news stories emerging from Russia:

Georgian Coast Guard Intercepts Trade Vessels between Turkey and Abkhazia

The Georgian Coast Guard recently intercepted an Abkhazian cargo ship filled with scrap metal bound for Turkey and a Turkish cargo ship filled with fuel as part of Georgia’s economic blockade of the breakaway region. The incident raised already high anti-Georgian sentiment in Abkhazia, a de facto independent region backed by Russia. Abkhazia and South Ossetia remain in a strange state of international and legal quagmire one year on from Russia’s land war with Georgia.

The Other Russia: When The News Isn’t Reported

When the News Isn’t Reported

On August 17th, a powerful explosion ripped through the Sayano–Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station in southern Russia. Even as the public tried to make sense of the disaster, authorities mounted libel charges against one journalist, Mikhail Afanasyev, who tried to independently verify death counts, questioning the rescue effort and asking if living workers were still trapped in the wreckage. Writing for the Grani.ru online newspaper, journalist Vitaly Portnikov relates the way Afanasyev was silenced with the mass censorship of calamities during the Soviet Union, and resurgent government control over the media. Public safety, Portnikov argues, is just one of the necessary functions of the media that disappears when the press serves the interests of the government and not the people.

The death of Said Buryatsky (weekly review)

By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog

It is hard to know what prompted an anonymous representative of the North Caucasus Islamist insurgency last week todeny the earlier Internet report that Said Buryatsky (aka Said Abu Saad al-Buryati, aka Aleksandr Tikhomirov) took part in the suicide bombing of the police department in Nazran, Ingushetia, on August 17, by the driving of a Gazelle cargo van laden with explosives into it. The attentive observer will have little difficulty in determining that the original version of the report was correct. One needs only to analyze the contents of the video footage of Buryatsky’s statement to see that this is so.

In the video recording Buryatsky is sitting inside the Gazelle van. The footage was probably not taken in the mountains, as he is dressed in casual clothes, not the military camouflage of an Islamist insurgent which he would normally wear in the forest. His beard is cut short. ...
