On August 31, 1980, an agreement was signed at the strike-bound Lenin shipyard in Gdansk — by Lech Walesa, an electrician and head of the shipyard strike committee; and Mieczyslaw Jagielski, deputy prime minister and chairman of a special government commission.
Thus, the authorities almost fully accepted the 21 demands by the striking workers that are today inscribed on the shipyard’s front gate, including the recognition of independent labor unions, the right to strike, the freeing of political prisoners and democratic opposition activists, and the abolition of censorship. The principal political force at that time — the Polish United Workers’ Party (PURP) — could not but give in: Working people throughout Poland had shown solidarity with the shipyard workers.

Solidarity’s triumph lasted for 16 months. ...

Real politician and real life

A senior Chechen representative confirmed that Shamil Basayev had rejoined the Chechen government, and said the radical warlord would be kept in check by State Defense Council, AP reported.

Basayev, who claimed responsibility for last year's deadly school seizure in southern Russia and other attacks, rejoined the Chechen government as First deputy prime minister on Aug. 25, Osman Ferzaouli, foreign minister for the CHRI, told The Associated Press.

"He has promised to be more responsible," Ferzaouli, who lives in Denmark as a refugee, said about Basayev.

"Basayev is a soldier, but he cannot refuse to take orders given by the state defense council," which would put him "out of the law," Ferzaouli said.

The state defense council is the inner circle of top field commanders and Chechen leaders that makes key decisions for the Chechen force.

The Kavkaz Center last week said Basayev had rejoined the Chechen government in a move that analysts said reflected the desire to ...
