Here are three observations from a short visit. The country has 90 million mobiles, enough for almost two-thirds of the population, while in Moscow there are more phones than residents. For every struggling babushka who barely knows what a mobile is, there is a yuppie businesswoman with two or three designer versions. At a hotel construction site a hundred yards from the Kremlin, scores of Tajiks, Uzbeks and Azeris wait for buses to dump them back at their dormitories. Moscow has three million unregistered foreign workers, according to the federal migration service, and all the problems of ruthless gangmasters which go with that. At tube station kiosks every kind of soft-porn magazine is on offer. An ... >> full

But light -- truth, understanding, knowledge -- is there, and it will only shine in many dark places if I reflect it." Alexander Papaderosby "I consider trial by jury as the only anchor yet imagined by man by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution.... A little rebellion now and then ... is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government.... The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." - Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own ... >> full

With only one difference. As much victims and destructions, as many it has done in New Orleans, federals and people of Kadirov manage to render annually during all six years of the Second Chechen war. Not speaking about the first one. Really, on the most underestimated calculations only the Second Chechen war has taken away not less 150 thousand lifes of the Chechen citizens. To achieve that much, nature should send the Chechen Republic two or three "Katrins" per one year. Only one A?ioa? (Groznii) which lays in ruins, looks so as if on it ... >> full

rom: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 9/12/2005 1:47 AM September, 11, 2005 ПолитковскаяOur pain This article was written during the first days of september, 2004, but, due to circumstances independent of the author, the article was not sent for publication. Exactly a year has passed since the events happened in Beslan. No changes are present neither in the Chechen Republic, nor around the Chechen Republic. The war and genocide continues, and the world community still stays in a role of passive contemplator. Therefore I consider the article not to be out-of-date, and I ask to publish it. ********* "We will win, provided that we don't do what the murderer of our children demand from us", "they want to set on to fight ingushs and ossetins, to unleash interethnic discord"_ etc. and so on. a muddy stream of lie, hypocrisy and cynicism. The full absence of common sense, simple logic. (Or unwillingness to have them?) to hear, see and read all this nonsense of the Russian MASS-MEDIA simply is sickening. I condole with relatives ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 9/12/2005 7:10 AM Shamil Basayev’s political comeback: a non-issue Shamil Basayev’s political comeback: a non-issue On August 25, Abdul Khalil Sadullayev, president of Ichkeria announced the new composition of the government. Shamil Basayev, the Chechen warlord, was appointed vice-prime minister. Is this comeback in politics a sign of a radicalisation of the conflict or of a deeper split among the resistance? Interview with Laurent Vinatier, specialist on the Chechen issue and PhD student at the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) in Paris. Why was Basayev chosen, why this radical war leader with an unsavoury reputation, the one who claimed responsibility for the hostage-taking in Beslan, and who recently declared he was a “terrorist”? Was it a real and unexpected surprise? It wasn’t surprising at all, in fact. Shamil Basayev embodies in the field the continuity of the Chechen struggle. Today, he is a quintessential symbol of resistance, an important reference point for the Chechens living in Chechnya, who certainly still hope the resistance will ... >> full
