Many Russians believe that the most positive qualities of their national character are ´´kindness and honesty´´ and ´´nobleness and decency,´´ according to a poll conducted by the All Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) with 1,600 respondents in 46 regions.

These qualities were selected by 41 percent and 26 percent, respectively, of those polled.

Some 43 percent said that the most negative Russian trait is an ´´inclination to alcohol,´´ and 23 percent responded with ´´laziness´´ and ´´inertness.´´

Surveys say that Russians are far more concerned about rising prices than they are about terrorism and especially human rights. While 71 percent of respondents in a survey by the Levada Polling Center said they were more worried about price inflation than anything else, just 15 percent felt threatened by terror attacks. Human rights? A mere 2 percent. The center’s head, Yuri Levada, explains why.

Yuri Alexandrovich, how have the anxieties of Russians changed in the last year? Can you note any tendencies?

The hopes of the federal center to stamp its authority on Chechnya by establishing various government and other bodies to generate an administered and controlled society seem destined to fail.

The upcoming parliamentary elections in November are sure only to increase the number of obedient officials eager to carry out the non-intelligent will of the Kremlin. And the absence of a real arena in which public discussion could be developed only fuels an explosive build-up of discontent.

The repressive control functions only on first appearance. By and large, Moscow, during the long years of war, has not succeeded in creating any comprehensible concept to either placate the republic or, more importantly, to neutralize separatist yearnings.
