TheOtherRussia: Obama Meets With Russian Opposition

posted by eagle on July, 2009 as ANALYSIS / OPINION

Obama Meets with Russian Opposition

On Tuesday July 7th, US President Barack Obama met with representatives of the Russian opposition in Moscow.  The lunch meeting, which took place in the Ritz-Carlton hotel, brought together a wide group of politicians not connected with the pro-Kremlin United Russia party.  Notables on the invite list included Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, United Civil Front leader Garry Kasparov,  Right Cause chairman Leonid Gozman, and Yabloko party leader Sergei Mitrokhin.  Each representative was given five minutes to speak.

Topics of discussion included the new trial against jailed Yukos oil company bosses Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev, and the US missile defense system.

During his talk, Garry Kasparov presented Obama with a list of opposition figures who have been persecuted and killed recently, as well as a list of prisoners serving politically-motivated sentences in Russia.  (Download Kasparov’s full statement in PDF format here.)

“The US president is prepared to establish relations, not just between the White House and the Kremlin, but between the ...

TheOtherRussia: Kasparov Interview On Obama Meeting

Kasparov Interview on Obama Meeting

Theotherrussia.org presents our interview with United Civil Front chairman Garry Kasparov after his meeting with US president Barack Obama. Kasparov was one of a group of Russian opposition figures to meet with Obama Tuesday afternoon in Moscow. (Download the interview in PDF format.)

Interview with United Civil Front Chairman Garry Kasparov after meeting with President Barack Obama
July 7, 2009 - Moscow

Q: You said at the press conference after the meeting with President Obama that his speech today was “less than what we wanted but more than what we expected.” What did you mean?

Garry Kasparov: Ideally he would have named names. He made some strong statements about democracy being the solution and the failure of totalitarianism, far stronger than anything we heard from the last two administrations. But he avoided directly criticizing Putin and Medvedev, the core of our dictatorial system. Nor did Obama mention Mikhail Khodorkovsky, whose jailing by Putin and continued imprisonment by Medvedev symbolizes everything Obama was criticizing ...

Window on Eurasia: Putin-Medvedev Regime ‘Proto-Fascist,’ Ukrainian Analyst Says

Paul Goble

Vienna, July 7 – Despite the hopes of many in the West for a more progressive approach from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, the Moscow “tandem” of Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin represents a form of “proto-fascism,” one that will only get worse for both its people and the surrounding countries unless Western countries adopt a tough line.
In Kyiv’s “Den’” on July 4, Ukrainian commentator Volodomyr Lesnoy said that the current Russian regime can best be classified as “proto-fascist,” a system he defines as one “in which the characteristics of fascism exist in an incomplete form” but which are sufficiently developed that they recall “the first stage of fascism” (www.day.kiev.ua/276377).
While many analysts had pointed to fascistic elements during the presidency of Putin, Lesnoy continued, most of them expected that the situation would improve under Medvedev. But that has not happened, and the situation, after a brief period of apparent improvement, has “begun a ...

Philadelphia Inquirer: Worldview: What Mind-Set Will Dominate Obama's Visit To Russia

Worldview: What mind-set will dominate Obama's visit to Russia

When President Obama visits Moscow this week, he'll have long meetings and dinner with President Dmitry Medvedev, a 44-year-old lawyer who says he wants to advance the rule of law.

But Obama is scheduled only for a breakfast with Vladimir Putin, the former president and current prime minister, who still controls the levers of power.

Putin took the lesser title because the constitution forbade another consecutive term as president; most Russians expect he'll return to the top job sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Medvedev is regarded as a weak front man.

Yet Obama's hopes of revamping U.S.-Russia relations will depend on which mentality dominates Russia's response to his proposals: the Cold War outlook of former KGB officer Putin, or the more open outlook Medvedev seems to hold.

Many skeptics say they believe there isn't much difference between the two men, especially on foreign policy. There are serious disputes between the two nations, on NATO expansion ...

Time: U.S. And Russia: The Talk Starts Here

U.S. and Russia: The Talk Starts Here

It is not now as it hath been of yore. Summits between the leaders who live in the White House and the Kremlin once transfixed the world, as competing superpowers, ideologies and worldviews clashed. But when Barack Obama visits Moscow on July 6, it will be something of a rarity for the U.S. President: a rather dull trip. Obama will encounter no cheering crowds or overly excited local media. His hosts, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, will be no more than coolly polite. The end of the visit is unlikely to be marked by grand declarations of friendship or announcements of breakthrough deals. Indeed, experts on both sides say the area where progress is most likely is in negotiations on the reduction ...
