Nothing But the Truth: Selected Dispatches
By Anna Politkovskaya
Harvill Secker

NOTHING but the truth . . . but whose truth? This book presents the world according to Anna Politkovskaya, an ardent critic of the Russian regime whose straight-talking provoked someone to kill her.

Selected dispatches from her articles for Novaya Gazeta reveal Politkovskaya's approach to journalism. She sees things in black and white. She does not shy away from judgments. She preaches rather than analyses. It is analysis that is regrettably absent in this book, published four years after Politkovskaya was gunned down. Without it, all the passion and the loathing and the wishing for a better, more democratic Russia and for a Chechnya without war seems wasted.

Why did she die, why is Chechnya still racked with violence, why is post-Soviet Russia corrupt and undemocratic? This collection of essays needed a cool-headed introduction to balance the zeal, to explain what aroused it and what it unleashed.

Politkovskaya's murder has not been solved. Many see the hand ...

KC: Moscow Bombings Turn Out To Be Favorable To Medvedev, And Not To Putin At All?

Moscow bombings turn out to be favorable to Medvedev, and not to Putin at all?

Publication time: Today at 15:34 Emirate time

The British the Times has flung in to the fans who seek to find in the attack of the Caucasian Mujahideen against Russian invaders and their puppets anything you like, even the traces of the Martians, but not the will of the Mujahideen themselves, a new version - "to whom it is favorable" in the wake of bombings in the Moscow metro.

"Recent developments in Moscow has cast Medvedev in a new light", British the Times wrote. The positions of the formal chieftain of the Kremlin have become stronger, and in 2012 he could get rid of Putin's tutelage, making Alexander Khloponin a prime minister, the paper says.

Thus, the Times confounded those analysts and commentators, including those from the cohort of Russian opposition democrats, who saw "Putin's trace" in the Moscow metro bombings.

The paper considers that Medvedev "has taken centre stage as Russia's leader in the ...

KC: A New Wave Of Instability Will Destroy Russia As A Country

A new wave of instability will destroy Russia as a country

Publication time: Today at 12:49 Emirate time

Recently published results of international research indicate that Russia is now experiencing a new wave of instability. Therefore, Moscow's influence in the CIS is markedly reduced under the pressure of China, the EU and the US. The collapse of Russia into separate parts is predicted.

The raw economy with a low quality of public administration transforms Russia into a victim of a new crisis. Its status as a regional leader in post-Soviet space is now turned out to be under the threat. This has been evidenced by the results of international studies entitled "Post-crisis Development Models", conducted by the Institute for Contemporary Studies (INSOR), Russian paper Nezavisimaya Gazeta reports.

The international study has been prepared in a survey of almost 300 experts from 57 countries - including China, Japan, India, USA and Russia.

The Group of Experts was formed as of economists, scientists, financial analysts, owners of leading companies, as well as ...

Prague Watchdog: The Evolution Of Terror (Weekly Review)

The evolution of terror (weekly review)

By Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog

The path that led Dokka Umarov to the Moscow subway bombings was neither straight nor straightforward. Only a few years ago, he saw himself as a Chechen patriot – in Islamic fundamentalist terminology, a "nationalist”. In the realm of Islamic faith he was a follower of the Sufi traditionalism of Sheikh Kunta-Khadzhi. It would, however, be mistaken to suppose that he opposed the use of terrorist attacks on principle. Like many others, while encouraging the activity of Shamil Basayev, he did not want the Chechen resistance to bear responsibility for the death of civilians. Ever since the hostage drama of Budyonnovsk it had been the Ichkerian leadership's practice to condemn methods of terror and to point out that they were applied by a unit which since 2002 had acted more or less on its own initiative – the Riyad-us-Salihiin "brigade of martyrs”, founded and led by Basayev.

Many Chechen insurgents did not ...

Window on Eurasia: Russians Wonder about Another Terrorist Attack and Whether the Powers that Be Can Prevent It

Paul Goble

Vienna, April 5 – Now that the initial shock of the March 30th metro attacks has worn off, Russians are beginning to ask where the terrorists are likely to strike next and what measures the powers that be, which have been singularly unsuccessful in preventing attacks in the past, may now put in place in order to prevent them.
Today, Versiya.ru offers two articles that address these issues, asking first where future attacks are likely (versia.ru/articles/2010/apr/05/terrakt_v_metro) and second what the Russian authorities are likely to dry to do to prevent a recurrence of the deadly subway attack of a week ago and how their lives are likely to be affected (versia.ru/articles/2010/apr/05/antiterror).
The conclusions of the two articles are not reassuring: On the one hand, the first article concludes that more terrorist attacks are likely to take place in Russia in the coming months. And on the ...
