Georgia vs Russia: Fanning the flames

RussiaWill there be another war in the Caucasus? This is a smoldering issue on more than one front, finds Eric Walberg, in the first of a two-part analysis of the spectre of conflict in this crucial crossroads. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the world expected a new era of peace and disarmament. But what happened? Russia pins hope on 'pragmatic politicians' in Georgia

14:5605/03/2010

Moscow said on Friday it linked the improvement of soured relations with Tbilisi to 'realistically minded' political figures in Georgia.

The statement came in the wake of a Thursday meeting in Moscow between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and one of Georgia's opposition leaders, Nino Burdzhanadze.

The statement said Russia and Georgia need to search for a way out of the impasse in their relations, which "is key to peace in the Trans-Caucasus."

Moscow stressed that it linked the restoration of relations "with those political figures in Georgia who take a realistic view of the current situation in the region."

The ministry said various aspects of "the current complex state of Russian-Georgian relations" were discussed and that "despite the ongoing crisis and the absence of diplomatic relations between Russia and Georgia, it is essential to search for a way out of this impasse."

Burdzhanadze also met with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Relations with Russia crucial for Georgia – Democratic Movement

03.03.2010, 14.44

TBILISI, March 3 (Itar-Tass) -- The political dialogue and normalization of relations with Russia is a vitally important question for Georgia, the Democratic Movement-United Georgia party said in a statement on Wednesday.

The party’s leader, former parliamentary speaker Nino Burdzhanadze has flown to Moscow for meetings with representatives of the Russian authorities and politicians. She is a second Georgian oppositional leader, after the leader of the For Fair Georgia party, Zurab Nogaideli, to be meeting with Russian politicians and officials.

Over the past weeks Burdzhanadze said more than once that she is prepared to negotiate with Russia proceeding from the interests of Georgia.

She accused the current Georgian authorities of failing to use chances and resources for normalizing relations with Russia.

The cancer ward (weekly review)

by Vadim Borshchev, special to Prague Watchdog

When about a year ago President Dmitry Medvedev suddenly began to characterize North Caucasus terrorism as one of Russia’s main problems, one that still remained to be solved, it almost seemed like an anti-Putin rebellion. For many years, Medvedev's predecessor had claimed credit for the pacification of Chechnya and tried to convince Russian public opinion that by the use of strong-arm tactics he had been able to avert a mortal threat to Russia's entire future.

It gradually became clear that for Medvedev the North Caucasus was a subject of special concern. This prompted him to create a new North Caucasus District, and he established the post of special envoy at a ministerial level. The appointee to the post, ex-Krasnoyarsk governor Alexander Khloponin, has allegedly received extensive powers. All of this looks like a serious ...
