All Voices: Russian Newspaper Joins Forces With WikiLeaks

Russian Newspaper Joins Forces With WikiLeaks

Romanovka : Russia | Dec 25, 2010

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has said his organization has damning materials about Russia, and now Novaya Gazeta, perhaps the dominant independent Russian newspaper, has unfettered access to them.

Novaya Gazeta, which is controlled by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and billionaire Alexander Lebedev, said on its website that it agreed to join forces with WikiLeaks to expose corruption in Russia, Bloomberg reports.

Novaya Gazeta has agreed to become the primary vehicle for publishing WikiLeaks materials on Russia, much like The New York Times did for WikiLeaks' stolen U.S. diplomatic cables.

"Assange said that Russians will soon find out a lot about their country and he wasn't bluffing," Novaya Gazeta said. "Our collaboration will expose corruption at the top tiers of political power. No one is protected from the truth."

The weekly newspaper is known in an industry dominated by state-run companies for its critical reports of the Kremlin and investigative coverage of Russian affairs, Bloomberg reports.

Novaya Gazeta correspondent Anna Politkovskaya, who wrote about graft under then-President Vladimir Putin and chronicled ...

Russia Profile Weekly Experts Panel: Are the Moscow Riots Symptoms of Larger Political Trouble?
Introduced by Vladimir Frolov

Moscow has seen its worst week of ethnic tensions in decades, culminating in mass rioting by soccer fans and Russian nationalists in central Moscow just yards away from the Red Square. Longstanding tensions between ethnic Russian nationalists and minorities from the North Caucasus had escalated after the fatal shooting of a Moscow soccer fan during a street fight earlier this month with members of an ethnic Caucasus group. Are the ethnic clashes a symptom of larger political trouble in Russia in the near future?

The riots on December 11 were spurred by the release of all the detained suspects in the case, in what appeared to be a corrupt police act facilitated by bribes from the local Caucasian community. Then, on December 15, more than 1,000 people – many armed with knives, clubs and stun guns – were arrested in central Moscow ...

KC: Minor Thug Arrested 'For Terrorism And Preparing Armed Rebellion' By Major Russian Thugs And Terrorists

Minor thug arrested 'for terrorism and preparing armed rebellion' by major Russian thugs and terrorists

Publication time: 23 December 2010, 21:04

Examination of the arrest order from Russian KGB thugs against a GRU colonel Kvachkov, suspected in an armed rebellion and facilitating terrorist activities, will be held behind closed doors, as the case materials allegedly contain "classified information", journalists were told at a Moscow political Lefortovo Prison "court".

The Lefortovo "court" received an application from the terrorist group "investigation department of the Russian FSB" requesting a "preventive measure in the form of detention" against Col. Kvachkov. The case file states that "the colonel is suspected of criminal offenses falling under clause # I of the article # 205 of the Russian criminal code ("recruiting and involvement of individuals into terrorist activity"), as well as under articles # 20 and # 279 ("an attempt to organize an armed rebellion").

"The examination of the application of the investigation on the arrest of Vladimir Kvachkov will be held behind closed doors, because the materials are secret", claims the Lefortovo "court".

Earlier, media outlets reported ...

CHECHENPRESS: Russia Deserves Better Than A 'Mafia State'

Russia deserves better than a 'mafia state'

December 12th, 2010

It has been a week when Russia has rarely left the front pages. To many of us it is no surprise to read US diplomatic cables laying responsibility for Alexander Litvinenko's murder at the door of the Kremlin, or seeing in Vladimir Putin a man with an irrational attitude and "the eyes of a killer" when it comes to Chechnya, or that Ramzan Kadyrov is "a warlord, pure and simple" - but it is nonetheless a damaging week for the Russian regime's record on Chechnya.

It is here, however, that we must be careful to differentiate between two different things - the Russian government, who were justly denounced a corrupt, "mafia state" in the Wikileaks revelations, and the Russian people, who in their everyday life find their freedom of expression and rights to representation oppressed by that same state. Solely judging by Russian responses to the speech I made to the World Chechen Congress in September, those people ...

Window on Eurasia: Russia’s Liberals Must Reclaim the Nationality Issue from Radicals, Milov Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, December 22 – Russia’s liberals have ceded issues like migration and the violence in the North Caucasus to the nationalists by failing to address them openly and honestly and to offer programs for their resolution, a shortcoming that has helped to marginalize the liberals in Russia and give the nationalists an undeserved victory, a liberal commentator says
In a commentary in "Gazeta” this week, Vladimir Milov, the head of the Democratic Choice Movement and of the Institute of Energy Policy, argues that the Manezh Square violence must become "a serious occasion” for re-assessing "the influence and role of nationalism and the factor of inter-ethnic relations in Russian politics (www.gazeta.ru/column/milov/3470929.shtml).
Among those who need to address these issues most attentively are Russia’s liberals, a group that Milov argues has generally failed to do so up to now, especially because as "many have justly noted,” the recent events represent the bursting ...
