Fraud claims in Russia poll
Dec. 2 - Opposition parties say there's been widespread fraud and intimidation in Russia's parliamentary elections
President Vladimir Putin's United Russia party was expected to win a majority of up to 65 percent of votes, a show of public support which Putin hopes to use as a mandate to retain influence after his second presidential term ends next year. The former World chess champion and arch Kremlin critic, Garry Kasparov accused the Russian authorities of "raping the whole electoral system." The Kremlin called the vote democratic and transparent.

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/4/2007 7:49 AM International Herald Tribune Putin calls victory 'sign of trust' in government By Clifford J. Levy Tuesday, December 4, 2007 MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin declared that his party's imposing victory in parliamentary elections was a "sign of trust" that had conferred new legitimacy on the government. But European monitors and opposition parties harshly criticized the balloting, saying it had been neither free nor fair. The final tally from the vote on Sunday showed that Putin's party, United Russia, had received 64.1 percent, giving it roughly 315 seats in the 450-seat Duma, or lower house of Parliament, which would be enough votes to amend the Constitution. Far behind was the Communist Party, with 11.6 percent, or 57 seats. Two other parties allied with Putin - the Liberal Democrats and Just Russia - are also to receive seats. Putin, who repeatedly used the Kremlin's authority to assist United Russia, said the election signified that the nation was maturing as a democracy. He noted that the four parties ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/4/2007 7:54 AM Putin eyes success in Russian vote Released : Tuesday, December 04, 2007 8:11 AM United Russia was on course to win over 60 per cent of the vote, amid criticism from opposition parties that the campaign and the vote itself were marred by an array of violations. If exit polls were correct, Putin's party will have won 306 of the 450 seats in the Duma, Russia's parliament, and the president will feel he has a mandate to continue exercising political power after the March presidential elections in which he cannot stand, though he might choose to continue either as party leader or prime minister. The Communists were placed second with just over 11 per cent of the vote, but the biggest surprise of the night was that two other parties looked set to pass the 7 per cent barrier to entering the Duma. One was the Liberal Democratic Party, among whose candidates is Andrei Lugovoi, wanted in Britain for the murder ... >> full

Russian Government Needs A History Lesson In Loyalty

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/4/2007 7:56 AM Russian Government Needs A History Lesson In Loyalty By Daniel P. de Gracia II, 12/3/2007 10:59:41 AM Every single citizen of the United States of America should be disappointed and outraged over Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision last week to terminate the Russian Federation's participation in the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty. Citing a long history of abuse and noncompliance by the U.S. and the West, Putin feels that he has heroically resisted evil and made an example of those who would oppose his nation's right to self-determination. Good for him, but it's time Uncle Sam gave Mother Russia a history lesson in just how much we've done to help that embryonic democracy succeed in the post Cold War era. During the Clinton Administration, Russia was in a state of shambles. Not only was she bankrupt from building nearly three times the thermonuclear missiles and conventional weapons of the United States and Western Europe combined, but her national state of ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 12/4/2007 8:07 AM Tuesday, December 4, 2007 Putin Praises Voters, Himself By Nabi Abdullaev Staff Writer Ivan Sekretarev / AP Communist Party activists on Monday protesting Sunday's election results under a sign reading "Give us a recount!" President Vladimir Putin thanked voters Monday for supporting the United Russia party in Sunday's State Duma election, while stressing his own central role in the victory. After garnering 64.1 percent of the votes, the party was set to get up to 315 of the 450 seats in the next Duma, according to preliminary results released by the Central Elections Commission on Monday. Putin told workers at an aviation plant in the Moscow region town of Khimki that the win came "not only in appreciation of what has been done but, most of all, as a result of voters' expectations that United Russia will continue to solve social problems." He was frank in his description of his own role. "I headed this party's ticket, and [the result] was definitely a demonstration of ... >> full
