My Vision of a Compassionate Future

My Vision of a Compassionate Future

By The Dalai Lama
Sunday, October 21, 2007; B01

Brute force can never subdue the basic human desire for freedom. The thousands
of people who marched in the cities of Eastern Europe in recent decades, the
unwavering determination of the people in my homeland of Tibet and the recent
demonstrations in Burma are powerful reminders of this truth. Freedom is the
very source of creativity and human development. It is not enough, as communist
systems assumed, to provide people with food, shelter and clothing. If we have
these things but lack the precious air of liberty to sustain our deeper nature,
we remain only half human.

In the past, oppressed peoples often resorted to violence in their struggle to
be free. But visionaries such as Mahatma Gandhi and the Rev. Martin Luther King
Jr. have shown us that successful changes can be brought about nonviolently. I
believe that, at the basic human level, most of us wish to be peaceful. Deep
down, we desire constructive, fruitful ...

«Us and them» – in response to Mansur Mazaev

SIA CHECHENPRESS, October 25, 2007

56(63). «And if they turn away, well, God knows of those spreading rot!’
(Koran, Surah III, ‘The Family of Imran’).

Dear Mansur! We all knew what was happening in the Caucasus while Anna Politkovskaya was still alive, before she was murdered by the enemies, yours and mine. She is no more, and we can only guess who is killing whom now in Ingushetiya and Chechnya. It makes no sense to plunge headfirst into the mirky whirlpool of nationalism. We all understand full well that a genocide of the Chechen people is taking place in the Caucasus, and any minute this genocide can spread to the rest of the Caucasus.

Those who have unleashed this dirty war in the Caucasus need no better argument that if we clasp the bogey of fascism and use it to argue our point. The easiest thing is to go ‘smash the ...

World must boycott Russian Olympics - Shevardnadze

World must boycott Russian Olympics - Shevardnadze

Georgia's Former President Eduard Shevardnadze on Wednesday called for the world to boycott Russia's 2014 Winter Olympic games to punish Moscow for "annexing" two Georgian breakaway regions.

Russia and Georgia have been trading threats since the two tiny Caucasus regions -- Abkhazia and South Ossetia -- broke away from Tbilisi's rule during wars in the early 1990s.

"Russia annexed the territories of Abkhazia and also South Ossetia," Shevardnadze, a former Soviet Foreign Minister, told Reuters.

"A state that annexes the territory of another state does not have the right to have any chance of holding the Olympic games, moreover Sochi is right next to the conflict zone."

President Vladimir Putin has presented the games as a sign of Russia's revival and vowed to rebuild the Black Sea resort of Sochi, where the games will be held. Sochi is just a half-hour car journey from Abkhazia.

Georgia says Russia illegally supports rebels in South Ossetia ...

The Daily Mail: ex-Russian spy Litvinenko was a paid-up MI6 agent

The Daily Mail: ex-Russian spy Litvinenko was a paid-up MI6 agent
Publication time: Today at 10:30 Djokhar time
The former Russian spy poisoned in a London hotel was an MI6 agent, the Daily Mail can reveal.

Alexander Litvinenko was receiving a retainer of around £2,000 a month from the British security services at the time he was murdered.

The disclosure, by diplomatic and intelligence sources, is the latest twist in the Litvinenko affair, which has plunged relations between London and Moscow to their lowest point since the Cold War.

On the day of the poisoning, November 1, former KGB agent Mr Litvinenko met prime suspect Andrei Lugovoy at the Millennium Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London.

Mr Lugovoy claims that Mr Litvinenko tried to recruit him to supply information to MI6.

The businessman, another former KGB agent, also alleged that his ex-colleague asked him to find candidates for political asylum here. He left Britain for Russia soon after, and has never returned.

Mr Litvinenko had defected to Britain in 2000 and was granted political ...

Putin hits out at US missile shield

Vladimir Putin said his friendship with George Bush had helped avert a global disaster [AFP]

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has compared the US proposal for a missile shield in Europe to the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 when the two superpowers came close to nuclear war.

Putin said that his friendship with George Bush, the US president, had helped to prevent the latest US initiative from turning into a global disaster.
"I would remind you how relations were developing in an analogous situation in the middle of the 1960s. Analogous actions by the Soviet Union when it deployed rockets on Cuba provoked the Cuban missile crisis," he told a news conference after the EU-Russia summit in Portugal.
Arms race

In 1962, Soviet-US relations were tested to the limit when America discovered the Soviet Union planned to deploy nuclear missiles in Cuba.

Now the US wants to build a defence shield in ...
