A US newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, reported about the Russian spy "Donald Heathfield" based on interviews with his classmates at Harvard Kennedy School, which the spy graduated in 2000.
"Heathfield", with his fictitious Russian spy "wife", who had a fake name "Tracey Foley", was arrested on Sunday in the FBI crackdown on Russian terrorist spy ring in the US. The FBI stated that his Canadian birth certificate is a fake.
Classmate Katz recalled that "Heathfield" claimed to be a Canadian-born US citizen. But Katz noticed a funny accent of "Heathfield" that lacked the Canadian "eh".
"Heathfield" spoke in English with a strange accent. Classmate Kalish remembered that "Heathfield" explained to her that he had an accent because he came to America from France.
Russian spy "Heathfield", shortly before his arrest, visited a meeting of classmates at the school's 10-year reunion last month. Kalish immediately suspected that something was wrong with "Heathfield" when he told her that his teenager children do not live with him, but in some other place. "It was very strange", Kalish said.
A 85-year-old neighbor of "Heathfield", Lila M. Hexner, said that FBI's information that "Heathfield" was a Russian spy has, finally, clarified her his strange behavior she observed over the years, in particular, the fact that he never attended community meetings of their small town and was not around his home very much (a photo of house in the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Russian spies lived. The house belongs to Moscow Center).
The spy's "wife", "Anna Foley", with whom the neighbor sometimes talked seeing her in the street, told her that "her husband was a salesperson who constantly traveled".
Lila also said that the "wife" of Russian spy "Heathfield", operating under a fake name of "Ann Foley", explained her foreign accent by the fact that she, too, was "from Canada".
Lila Hexner added:
- I guess to be a good spy is to do what they did: talk very little and don't get involved. I'd guess that's the way spies are taught. Arrest of these spies may just be the tip of the iceberg.
