MOSKOVSKY, Moscow Reg, June 16 (Itar-Tass) -- The Yabloko Russian united democratic party's leader Grigory Yavlinsky will run for the presidency in 2008.
The federal council of the party took the decision on Saturday.
After two days of discussion, the council approved the programme "Seven Steps to Equality of Possibilities" proposed by Yavlinsky.
The council in its resolution recommended to view participation in the presidential elections in Russia in 2008 as the most important political task of the party and nominate a candidate from the party for the presidency. It was decided to present Yavlinsky's programme to voters as the one for the presidential elections and for the parliamentary elections due next December.
The party is ideologically and organisationally ready for the 2007-2008 parliamentary and presidential elections, the resolution said.
The council's decision is only of a political character. Under the Russian legislation and the party rules, an official decision on participation in elections, approval of a programme and nomination of candidates must be taken by a party congress. It is preliminarily planned for next September.
Aside from the statement on participation in the elections, the council also adopted resolutions on the democratic opposition, the situation in the country, Yabloko's political position and others.
Yavlinsky, 55, who has been the Yabloko party’s head since it was established, ran for the presidency in 1996 and 2000 and had 7.42 and 5.8 percent of the votes, respectively. http://www.itar-tass.com/eng/level2.html?NewsID=11634616&PageNum=0
