Abkhaz Vice President Survives Fourth Assassination Attempt
Aleksandr Ankvab has survived at least four attacks.

Aleksandr Ankvab escaped with minor shrapnel wounds when an unknown attacker opened fire with a grenade launcher on his home in Gudauta early this morning. It was the fourth (possibly even the fifth) attempt on his life in the past five years. The motive for today's attack remains unclear, although according to unconfirmed reports Ankvab is perceived as capable of forcing the resignation of embattled de facto President Sergei Bagapsh, who was reelected last December to a second term. Bagapsh has denounced the attack as a bid to destabilize the breakaway Georgian region. Ankvab is 58 and a lawyer by training. Maxim Gvinjia’s Meeting with the Head of ICRC in Abkhazia

On September 20, 2010 Max Gvinjia met with the Head of MCRC Ynke Vandormael in Abkhazia. During the meeting the Head of the Mission told the Minister about the current projects of the mission in Abkhazia. Inter alia, the ICRC continues the program on assistance to the orthopedic centre in Gagra. The project on humanitarian aid to the needy population in the Kodory Valley is being realized too. In 2011, according to Ynke Vandormael the organization is going to exercise a project on assistance to suffered victims from mines. The Head of the ICRC in Abkhazia gave a positive assessment to the actions of the republic leadership on further financing of programs of social and humanitarian directions. Georgian President Saakashvili feigns victimization from his neighbors when it is Georgia who has victimized its neighbors with generations of military aggression and political persecution. He says he fears a Russian attack. But Russia only has agreed to protect Abkhazia from a Georgian attack. In fact it is Georgia, which has repeatedly attacked Abkhazia in the past that to this day refuses to renounce military action against us.

Last week, Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin, commander of the Russian air force, announced that Moscow had deployed a state-of-the-art S-300 (SA-20 Favorit variant) long-range air-defense system in Abkhazia, a region of the Republic of Georgia that Russia has occupied since the August 2008 war.
Since then, Russia has recognized breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent republics. According to Gen. Zelin, the task of the air-defense system is "to prevent violation of Abkhaz and South Ossetian airspace and to destroy any aircraft intruding into their airspace no matter what their purpose might be.” On Saturday, Gen.
