UN zooms Abkhazian system of education
Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – A group of representatives of four international agencies that operate under control of the United Nations had a close inspection of the educational situation in Abkhazia.

A mixed group of officials from the UN Development Program (UNDP), the World Food Program (WFP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and UN High Commissary of Refugees, was in Sukhum, capital of Abkhazia, yesterday to have talks with officials here. The group first met with Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba and then with Education Minister Indira Vardaniya.

Vardaniya did a detailed presentation both on problems facing the Abkhazian system of education and achievements the government has had in the field of education.

Abkhazian Ministry of Defence: Georgian militaries shot dead two Abkhazian prisoners

Sources in Abkhazia are asserting that two Abkhazian servicemen were executed by Georgian militaries already after capture, and they had rendered no resistance.

We remind you that the joint inspection, which on September 22-23 visited the place of the incident in the Tkuarchal District, has established that the murder of the Abkhazian frontier guards was committed in the territory of Abkhazia by Georgian armed formations, and not in the territory controlled by the authorities of Georgia, as it was presented by the Georgian party.

Anatoly Zaitsev, First Deputy Minister of Defence of Abkhazia and Chief of the Joint Staff, has stated this today to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. We note here that along with peacemakers and ...

GEORGIAN EX-MINISTER ARRESTED AFTER DENOUNCING PRESIDENT

Police swoop following former minister Irakli Okruashvili’s lurid allegations
about the Georgian president.

By David Paichadze in Tbilisi

Former Georgian defence minister Irakli Okruashvili was arrested on September
27, two days after dramatically denouncing his ex-ally and boss, President
Mikheil Saakashvili.

Okruashvili was detained in the offices of his newly-formed party, the Movement
for a United Georgia. He was charged with four criminal offences – extortion,
money laundering, abuse of office and “exceeding professional duties”.

According to his lawyer, he denies all the charges.

His driver and several of his bodyguards were also arrested. Police searched
Okruashvili’s apartment and family home.

Around 200 of the former minister’s supporters gathered outside the new party’s
headquarters to protest against the arrest, and his political allies called for
a public protest outside parliament on September 28.

Government critics appeared on ...

Agency Caucasus: Joint Investigation Proves Tbilisi Wrong

Joint investigation proves Tbilisi wrong

While Georgia imprisoned a group of six people after they got arrested for involvement in a fighting on September 20 when two Abkhazian security forces were killed, a joint group of investigation that had inspectors from Russia, Georgia, Abkhazia and the United Nations reported in flat contradiction with the Tbilisi argument that the incidents happened not in Georgia but in Abkhazia.

Tbilisi said in its argument that the fighting broke out when Abkhazian security officers entered Upper Kodor as an area of land under Georgian control. Sukhum answered back in its argument that the fighting was caused by Georgian soldiers leaked out to the Abkhazian military camp in Tkaurchal. The joint group of investigators found out, however, with conviction that the ...

Agency Caucasus: UN To Detect How The Fighting Happened

posted by FerrasB on as Abkhazia

UN to detect how the fighting happened
Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – The United Nations will have the final say in deciding how the Georgian commando squads fought with the Abkhazian security forces.

The United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia, UNOMIG, sent a group of officials to the region where the fighting took place to find out how it really happened. The UNONIMOG is officially assigned the task of observing compliance on both parts with the ceasefire agreement across the controversial zone. Abkhazian officials accused the Georgian sabotage group of igniting the fighting when the group attacked a military training camp in Tkaurchal, 10 kilometres away from the Abkhazian-controlled Kodor valley. Georgian officials, however, argued that the fighting began when the Abkhazian security forces were stopped as they entered ...
