Georgian-Abkhaz Talks Scheduled for August 4

UN sponsored talks between the Georgian and Abkhaz sides will be held in Tiflis on August 4 to discuss issues related to the security and return of internally displaced persons to Abkhazia, UN Secretary General´s Special Representative Heidi Tagliavini said after talks with Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh in Sokhum on August 2.

These talks were initially planned for July 22, but were thwarted because the Abkhaz side refused to arrive in Tiflis, citing the seizure of a Turkish vessel carrying cargo bound for Abkhazia.

Georgia Hopes To See Abkhazia At Negotiation Table

Georgia hopes to see Abkhazia at negotiation table

03/08/2005 15:08 TBILISI, August 3 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia is hoping that Abkhaz representatives will not cancel a meeting here Thursday on conflict resolution, Georgian State Minister for Separatist Conflicts Georgy Khaindrava said.

He said Foreign Minister of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia Sergei Shamba, Deputy Defense Minister Garri Kupalba and others officials were to attend the meeting, held under the auspices of the UN.

"Media expectations of such negotiations are often exaggerated," the official said.

The Georgian-Abkhaz meeting in Tbilisi under the UN aegis was postponed twice following Abkhaz officials' refusal to come to the Georgian capital.

Abkhazia refused to join the talks following Georgia's detention of a Turkish vessel carrying foodstuffs and building materials to Abkhazia. The cargo was released to Abkhazia on August 1 with UN assistance.

Georgia, Abkhazia to hold talks on security guarantees

TBILISI. Aug 2 (Interfax) - Representatives of Georgia and the breakaway region of Abkhazia are due to meet in Tbilisi on Thursday to consider guarantees of security and of the non-resumption of Georgian- Abkhaz hostilities, Georgian State Minister Giorgi Khaindrava told reporters on Tuesday.

The meeting was scheduled to be held several days ago, but Abkhazia refused to take part, accusing Georgia of failing to keep its promise to release humanitarian relief that was aboard a Turkish ship seized by Georgian coastguards off Abkhaz shores on July 3. The relief was delivered to Abkhazia on Monday with the intervention of UN officials.
