SUKHUMI. Aug 12 (Interfax) - President Sergei Bagapsh of the self- proclaimed republic of Abkhazia said a meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is possible only "if it is thoroughly prepared and can bring about tangible results."
At the same time, "the militant rhetoric by the Georgian leadership and the actions of the Georgian military in Abkhaz territorial waters do not facilitate such a meeting," Bagapsh told journalists in Sukhumi on Friday.

2/8/2005 Seeking peace in Georgia
At the invitation of Conciliation Resources a meeting of Georgian and Abkhaz representatives took place in Vienna 30 July to 1 August 2005. Participants discussed the current state of the peace process and reflected on a series of issues that are of mutual concern. The two and a half day meeting was an off shoot of the "Schlaining" dialogue process that has been organised by Conciliation Resources and the Berghof Center over the past five years as a forum for informal dialogue between Georgian and Abkhaz politicians and officials. The participants welcomed the opportunity to meet in an informal context.

Wheat flour, construction materials, and other cargo impounded by the Georgian authorities from a Turkish merchant ship intercepted one month ago for illegally entering Georgian territorial waters were delivered to Abkhaz authorities on 1 August through the mediation of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG).
A court in the Georgian Black Sea town of Poti sentenced the ship´s captain last week to four years´ imprisonment.

Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Giorgi Khaindrava said that he held informal talks with officials from Abkhazia in Vienna on August 1.
Secretary of the Abkhaz National Security Council Stanislav Lakoba and Vice Premier Leonid Lakerbaia participated in the talks.
´´We have discussed issues related to confidence building. The Georgian and Abkhaz sides should find a common language,´´ Khaindrava stated on August 2.
The UN led Georgian-Abkhaz negotiations regarding security issues and the return of internally displaced persons to the region are slated for August 4 in Tiflis.
