Former Georgian envoy in Abkhazia will no longer obey Tbilisi

TBILISI. July 23 (Interfax) - The Georgian president's former envoy in the Kodori Gorge Emzar Kvitsiani has blamed the Georgian government for disregarding problems facing residents of Kodori, the only district in Abkhazia controlled by Tbilisi, and warned that the earlier disbanded self-defense units would be re-established in the region.

Kvitsiani told the press on Sunday that he will no longer obey the Georgian authorities.

He also announced that Kodori residents had asked him to assume command of the Hunter local self-defense detachment, earlier disbanded, and that he had given his consent.

"You know that Georgian Defense Minister Irakly Okruashvili plans to storm the gorge on July 27. However any military force coming here will be met with ...

Moscow to work with Abkhazia as independent state - Luzhkov

SUKHUMI. July 20 (Interfax) - Moscow will build its relations with Abkhazia as with an independent state, Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov said at a meeting with Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh in Sukhumi, where he is on a one-day visit.

"We are not disturbed by the constant fueling of the situation by Georgia. We will cooperate with Ablkhazia without fear or hesitation, as with an independent state," the mayor said.

Russian peacekeepers' pullout might lead to humanitarian disaster - Abkhaz foreign minister

SUKHUMI. July 18 (Interfax) - The withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict area could lead to a humanitarian disaster, and Russia should not yield to "the Georgian parliament's reckless demands," Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergei Shamba has said.

"The implementation of the Georgian parliament's decision will lead to another escalation of tensions between Abkhazia and Georgia, a direct contact between the sides' armed forces, and the resumption of military activities," Shamba told Interfax Tuesday.

"The unprecedented increase in Georgia's military spending shows Tbilisi's preparations for a forceful resolution of the Georgian-Abkhaz and Georgian-South Ossetian conflicts rather than a desire to reach a consensus and keep in place the peaceful dialogue," he said.

"Russia should not ...

Georgian leader calls Abkhazian referendum plan provocation

17/07/2006 00:36 TBILISI, July 16 (RIA Novosti) -- Georgia's president vehemently criticized Sunday a proposal to hold a referendum on the independence of the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia.

"All the talk that Abkhazia should hold a referendum and possibly secede from Georgia is a provocation that the international community will not take seriously," Mikheil Saakashvili said on television.

But he added that a referendum could be possible after the return of Georgian refugees to Abkhazia and with account for the interests of the ethnic groups in the region.

"I am certain that the Group of Eight [industrialized nations] share this viewpoint and will express their support," the president said.

He called the conflicts in Georgia political rather than ethnic and said Tbilisi was not ...

SUKHUMI, Georgia, July 10 (Reuters) - Russian tourists will crowd the beaches of Abkhazia all summer. Officially, they are holidaying in a war zone, but where else can they find such a cheap week in the sun?

"This is our second year, we like it here. There isn't even the smell of war any more," said Alexander Grigoryev, a 32-year-old who made the 36-hour train journey from the Volga region to splash around in the warm waters of the Black Sea.

"We have sensed nothing but friendliness, we are renting an apartment with a little sauna and a little pool."

This little wedge of a self-declared state, squeezed between the Caucasus and the sea, is not all sun ...
