Georgia refuses to rule out force in spat with Abkhazia gorge

25/07/2006 13:41

TBILISI, July 25 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia's authorities hope to resolve a conflict peacefully in a gorge on the border with the self-proclaimed republic of Abkhazia but are not ruling out the use of force, a high-ranking government source said Tuesday.

The source said talks with Emzar Kvitsiani, former President Eduard Shevardnadze's envoy to the Kodori Gorge, were expected to start in two hours.

But if no agreement is reached, Georgian authorities will use Interior Ministry troops to restore order in the gorge, he said.

The source also denied reports on the deployment of Georgian troops near the border with Abkhazia.

On Sunday, Kvitsiani said Defense Ministry troops were going to enter the area, which is the de facto ...

Reports: Troops Deployed Near Abkhazia
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 2006-07-25 11:18:01

Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili and Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili are in Mestia, the mountainous region of Svaneti in western Georgia which borders breakaway Abkhazia, Rustavi 2, Imedi and Public TV stations reported early on July 25.

The deployment of troops came after the Georgian leadership refused to hold talks with rebel warlord Emzar Kvitsiani, who, with his militia group, is based in Kodori gorge in breakaway Abkhazia .
It is not yet clear what the authorities’ plans are, as information remains scarce. Imedi TV reported that law enforcers barred its crew from shooting footage of the area and seized recordings that they had made

Georgia moves against local ruler and militia
By C.J. Chivers The New York Times

Published: July 25, 2006
