The Abkhaz newspaper Nuzhnaya Gazeta reported on July 19 that a draft law envisaging the creation of free economic zones in Abkhazia has been submitted to the republic´s Parliament for consideration...

The newspaper quoted one of the co-authors of the draft law, Ruslan Jopua, as saying that the document envisages ´´favorable conditions´´ for investments in Abkhazia.

He said that these areas, which potentially might be created in Ochamchire, Tkvarchel and the Gal districts, will be tax-free for investors for three years.

Ruslan Jopua said that the Abkhaz Parliament is expected to consider this draft law in autumn.

Abkhazia refuses to participate in security measures meeting

22.07.2005, 10.31

TBILISI, July 22 (Itar-Tass) - Abkhazia has refused to take part in a two-day meeting in the Georgian capital to design international security measures for the conflict zone in the breakaway province, scheduled for July 22 to 23, Abkhazia's Foreign Minister Sergei Schamba told Rustavi-2 television in Tbilisi on Friday.

The foreign minister explained it by the fact that the goods confiscated from the Turkish ship Tarik Gunner have not yet been returned to Abkhazia. The ship was detained by Georgian border guards on July 3 for an attempt to violate the Abkhaz section of the Georgian sea border.
