RUSSIA AND ABKHAZIA AGREE ON MILITARY BASE IN GUDAUTA

On February 17, Russia and Abkhazia signed a treaty on building a military base in Gudauta during the official visit of Abkhazia’s president Sergei Bagapsh in Moscow. The document is a result of the general agreement on military cooperation between Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia established in September 2009. The Russian land base will be established using and modernizing the existing military infrastructure in Gudauta, where 1,700 soldiers are already deployed.

The agreement on the land base is part of the evolving military cooperation between Abkhazia and Russia. The next moves in this sphere will likely be an airbase in Gudauta and navy base in Ochamchire, situated very close to the administrative ...

JEWS OF ABKHAZIA CELEBRATE PASSOVER

Starting from Monday the Holy Week began at Christians and Passover at Jews. The day before the festive first seder (dinner) indicating the beginning of the Jewish seven-day Passover holiday was held in the Sukhum synagogue.

Thanks to the annual aid from the Sochi main rabbi Are Edelkopf each Jewish family living in Sukhum received a box of matzo, "Shalom” Jewish community of Abkhazia said. The Sochi rabbi sent the Jews living in the republic a congratulation on the beginning of Passover and sent kosher grape juice and meat products made in Israel.

An assistance program to the needy, war and labor veterans is actively implemented in the Jewish community of Abkhazia.

THE REPUBLIC OF NICARAGUA’S FOREIGN MINISTER SAMUEL SANTOS LOPES TO VISIT ABKHAZIA IN THE MIDDLE OF APRIL

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nicaragua Samuel Santos Lopes will visit Abkhazia in the middle of April, the MFA of Abkhazia protocol department said. During his visit Samuel Santos Lopez will meet with the President Sergey Bagapsh, the Prime Minister Sergey Shamba, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Maxim Gvindzhia, MPs.

Nicaragua is the second country after Russia that recognized independence of Abkhazia.

TENTH ROUND OF DISCUSSIONS ON SECURITY AND STABILITY IN TRANSCAUCASIA BEGAN IN GENEVA

Delegations of Abkhazia, Georgia, Russia, the USA and South Ossetia participate in consultations held under the aegis of the United Nations, EU and OSCE.

Discussion will be traditionally carried on in a format of two panels - on security issues and on humanitarian subjects.

According to the message of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, published on the threshold of the meeting, at the consultations Russia will support increasing the efficiency of incident prevention mechanisms in the region.
